Sugar Tax effects on home brewers

I think if anything, it will encourage those who use sugar to experiment with using grains to boost their brews (if doing a kit) :thumb:

Kilner Beer Kit - reduced at Asda

@Godsdog I think it was in Kitchen/Home... @hoptoit I looked at postage but even the bog standard "Royal Mail 2nd class no signature just pray it arrives" option is about £13 which probably isn't worth it. I could take a photo of the barcode and maybe you can order it inbranch??

Kilner Beer Kit - reduced at Asda

As you will see from the picture today, yesterday I got it for £6. Today it's showing £6.50... Now it's gonna cost me 16p per pint....outrageous  ...and the shelves in my store are still ripe for picking (sorry, Cqr)

Kilner Beer Kit - reduced at Asda

@ Godsdog I live near to one of the big megastores (clothing/gardening/kitchen stuff) and noticed they started selling them around Xmas time. To be honest, the prices for kits and bits were more expensive than Wilkos (all hail Wilkos) and initially I turned a blind eye. However, bottle caps...

Kilner Beer Kit - reduced at Asda

Popped into Asda to do me weekly shop and their kits (lager/bitter/cider) have been reduced from £19.50 (far too high IMO) down to £6!!! Not that I really need kits as I do BIAB and AG brews but can't argue with that price so I got one, but will prob get a few others so I can...

    Low ABV

+1 for using a refractometer....I need to get a new one so thanks for the reminder :) If you primed those bottles, then you may have some rockets-in-waiting.... :s

    Low ABV

Do you have the recipe list we can take a look at? Was it a kit/BIAB/AG?? If the reading was still 1.037 after a few days, it sounds like a stuck fermentation. Other than that, sounds like fermentation hadn't finished...

Anyone tried Micro Batch Kits from Homebrew Depot in London

Yep, the refill kits aren't too bad...i'd either purchase that or make your own. What sort of beers would you be looking to make, and how big is your kit?

Anyone tried Micro Batch Kits from Homebrew Depot in London

It looks like the price charged is mainly for the equipment - is there anything on the kit list you don't have? If it's brewing materials, these can be purchased for a LOT less :)

Anyone tried Micro Batch Kits from Homebrew Depot in London

http://www.homebrewdepot.co.uk/collections/micro-batch-brewing/products/the-ipa-the-micro-batch-beer-brewing-kit?variant=14723437187 £39.95 seems A LOT of money for what you get, and I'd hate to see a fellow homebrewer get ripped off. The idea of making a small batch is great but when I...

    Banks's beer at the Co-Op

Not sure if it's just my local branch (and if it is i'm going back for more!) but the Co-Op is stocking the 500ml bottles of Banks's Bitter for 58p...

    Currant wine

Where are you getting 1kg currants for this price? My local Tesco sells 500g for £1.69 :wha: I presume you're also soaking these beforehand; most currants tend to be coated in sunflower oil...

    Corks popping out

Gotcha - just siphon into bottles, add nothing and cork.

    Corks popping out

Ah, so corks popping out are a normal thing? Surely if they pop out and I notice a few hours later there's a risk of contamination??

    Corks popping out

Apologies for the billy basic question; I brew more beer than wine, but I do dabble now & again. So basically, I usually put wine into clear beer bottles and just cap it. However, I recently got my hands on some green wine bottles and one champagne bottle. So I did the usual - added sugar to...

Four cans two brews, with some live brewery yeast

Cool; what sort of beers do they brew? Will the yeast compliment the beer or make something different do you think??

    Who's brewing this weekend?

I was originally going to have a crack at a bitter, but SWMBO thinks I've done enough beer-related stuff this week (moving a cider & a dunkel into conditioning & making celery wine) so i'm under orders to spend a bit of quality time with her. :D (where's the emoticon for under the thumb?!)

    please help, extract advice.

I would start off small; what sort of style do you want to brew? *Shop around and get yourself some speciality grains *Wilkos do cheap DME. You can also get plain liquid malt from Holland & Barrett *Cheap hops from ebay/ebid - maybe pick up 2/3 small packs and keep them in the freezer *Get...
