To drink or not to drink?

I’ve been drinking my way through a bitter kit, which is nearing the end. It’s been in a PB and I’ve just pulled a pint off and saw something white blob through the tap. It came through in one blob but has since spread itself across the top of the pint. I know my seal on the cap isn’t great so...

    Beer advent calendar - COSTCO

Myself and Mrs Hagrid went to COSTCO this afternoon and I spotted their advent calendar. A 24 pack of beers from around the world for £35 inc. VAT. I didn’t pay enough attention to if it was 330ml or 500ml. If you get one, enjoy!

    What’s this cheeky chappy called?

Inspired by @jjsh question about the correct pronunciation of scone. What do you call this little bundle breadlines. I know it as a teacake. You can have white tea cakes, brown tea cakes and fruit tea cakes. Mrs. Hagrid knows it as a batch?! Photo credit - lovefood

    Cider press material

Good evening one and all, I’ve built a cider presser in anticipation of a glutton of pears from a friend. I’ve gone with the fabric wrap type. Has anyone built one before? What fabric did you use? I’d like to be able to bung it in the washingmachine afterwards. Is Muslin strong enough? Got...

    Wilko kit (don’t shoot me!)

Hi all, Having not made a beer in yonks I thought I’d start with a nice simple kit. But then reading a thread on here somewhere it was mentioned that wilko kits lack enough malt to make a good go of it. Two quick questions: 1 has anyone made this kit before? 2 would adding some spraymalt...

    Other hobbies

Im curious; apart from brewing delicious concoctions what other hobbies do people have? Mrs Hagrid says I have one hobbies. Collecting expensive hobbies. But when not brewing I seem to get hit with things like hockey pucks (I’m a goalie) and swords in fencing and 15th century re-enactment. This...

    23ltr copper -> 30ltr FV

I’ve not done a beer in ages and have a 23ltr Copper and I’ve now got a 30ltr FV (Key Keg) if I make 23ltr of wort (with 30ltrs worth of grain), boil and add hops, can I make up the remaining 7ltrs with cool boiled water? I assume that’s too much head space to leave. Thanks again.

    Bottle bomb stories.

After redecorating the kitchen ceiling a lovely colour of Kombucha yesterday (also hitting the wall and stairs) I thought there must be some funny bottle bomb stories to be shared. Santa looks like he’s been on the lash all night finished off with a donner kabab that just wouldn’t stay down...

    When to add flavouring additions?

Apologies if this has been asked before, but I’m thinking of doing a heather AG beer (because we’ve got a heather in our garden) But I’m not sure when the best time to add it is? I’ve got bags of time, it’ll be next spring when it’s in flour again. Cheers all.

    Scoby storage

Good afternoon (just!) all I’m looking into having a play with making Kombucha. But want to make sure I can store my scoby correctly, do you just leave it in a bowl/jar with some tea in the fridge (with or without a sugar source?) ? How long can you leave them between brews? Thanks again...

Degassing, cold crashing, dining and bottling... in that order?

Good afternoon, I’ve got an elderflower wine bubbling away nicely in the DJ but wanted to double check the running order of my next steps when I get there. Presumably when I degass it’ll stir up what settles at the bottom of the DJ, so do I degass -> cold crash -> add finings -> bottle...

    Can you guesstimate OG?

I started an elderflower wine on Sunday and got everything in the pot enjoyed hearing the bubbles and then got distracted with every intention of returning to take an OG. However, life happened and 3 days later I’ve transferred it to a DJ. Is there a way of guesstimating an OG from the recipe?

    Egg white in elderflower wine?

Good afternoon all, I did mean to ask this before I started but hey-ho. I’ve got an old elderflower wine recipe which calls for an egg white. Has anyone used whites in wine before? What does it do? And note to self.... beat the egg more... I’ve got what looks (and, I suppose, actually is)...

    Coconut sugar

Good afternoon all, My wife has just brought some coconut sugar in (and made some amazingly delicious fruit and oat bars!) but it got my thinking about using coconut sugar in beer (and brews in general) it’s got s lovely caramel flavour and is quite full bodied (is sugar can be full bodied)...
