I've mistakenly made one of my favourite beers!

I couldn't quite put my finger on what was so familiar with my first AG brew. I was trying to replicate Grolsch and although my beer has a VERY strong hoppy flavour, it was more citrusy than I was after. I put this down to using too much saaz and overshooting the flavour that I was going for...

Thinking about a stepped mash, is my logic sound?

I understand that the quality of the malt that we have means that we shouldn't need to do a protein rest or anything like that, but I was reading around and as I understand it in order to get a drier, more fermentable, beer I should do a stepped mash. I'm thinking of doughing in aiming for...

Any 530d or 535d owners? Thinking of buying.

I'm leaning towards the 530d given that it comes in manual and it's a fair bit better in fuel economy etc, but I've not completely ruled out the 535d either. Just looking for opinions, running costs etc. Cheers :)

    Saaz for bittering?

I was reading up some background info on a beer and it states that Saaz and Perle hop varieties are used, firstly for bitterness, then late-hopped for aroma. The way it's said I presumed that Saaz was being used for the bitterness but surely it would take FAR too much saaz to bitter a brew? The...

    Gambling odds.... is this right?

    Twin regulator leaking

I got a twin regulator from Norm a few months back, I only recently (last month) used it along with the corny kegs etc that I got at the same time (I was lazy in getting gas). Anyway, after very little use (less than 1 month and around 30 pints) it would appear that it's bitten the dust. I'm...

Wort Chillers - Stainless or Copper?

Just browsing around and noticed one supplier doing stainless chillers for less than the copper equivalent. Is there a reason that copper is better than stainless? I would have thought, given the properties of stainless, that it would be better?

    Overnight mash.... style dependant?

Looking to make a German pilsner style brew and I've just completed the hour mash (dropped from 67.2 down to 66.2 over an hour, well happy). I was planning on leaving it overnight but I was worried that I would end up with too much body. Is the style an important factor when doing an all nighter?

    Anyone ever lost beer?

Got a real strange issue here. I filled up a corny with my Grolsch last Thursday. I had 4 pints on Thursday, 7 pints on Friday, none on Sunday, 3 on Monday, none on Tuesday, 3 last night and 4 tonight. By my rough math I get 21 pints. If I round that up to 25 to take account of the loss due to...

Couple of silly questions regarding malt...

Stupid question number 1.... When I buy a sack of grain from the malt miller.... is it already crushed and ready to drop in for a mash? Stupid question number 2..... Recipe calls for German 2 Row In my head I'm translating that to pilsner malt. Is this correct? Is there a difference...

First time BIAB efficiency... what should I am for?

My end goal will be to hit around 85%, which I believe to be the norm. For my first time though... what should I shoot for? Should I consider around 70% and getting anything more as gravy... or should I just go all in and brew for 85%? My method is going to be BIAB with a buffalo boiler so I...

    Crystal malts - UK Variants

When looking at US recipes they often mention Crystal 10L, 20L etc etc. What is the best thing to search for when looking for UK equivalents? I understand that the figure relates to the lovibond rating and that if I divide the EBC by 1.9 I get there (roughly)... is that all there is to it? So...

    Coopers ginger Beer Kits

I've just been pondering this ginger beer kit. Given that they can be made non-alcoholic would suggest that there aren't any fermentables in the can itself. The instructions to make the non-alcoholic version are to add 115g of sugar. Obviously this will give a certain amount of alcohol but I...

Calling all sparks - Powering the garage

My garage has always had power but it's nowhere near regulation. I would like to beef up the spec a little, in order to be a LOT safer, and I'm looking for a little advice.... Using a calculator for the length I require it's recommended that I use 2.5mm core. Is there any downfall of beefing...

One for the Chemistry boffins... CO2 states

Just asking this out of sheer curiosity, nothing else lol. I was wondering at which pressure CO2 becomes a liquid. Having googled around it seems that a phase diagram is required as the pressure that it liquifys at is different depending on the temperature. I'm struggling to get my head around...

Blichmann Beer gun with high carbonation

Has anyone used this piece of kit with higher carbonated beer? I'm thinking about getting one but I'll mostly be bottling beer and fizzy cider. I can see how it would be really effective with lightly sparkling ales, stouts, etc but how does it fare with higher levels? Thanks :)

Carbonating via keg in the fridge then moving...

I doubt this is a unique situation but I'm struggling to find any references to what I'm looking to do. Ok I've got my corny keg and I've filled it with beer, it's now time to carbonate. The level I am looking for is around 2.7 volumes and I'll be doing it in a fridge. By my calculations that...

Is there a limit to the length of a beer line?

As above really. I've had a wacky idea about storing my beer & chiller in the loft and running a couple of lines down to the kitchen lol. Wasn't sure if there would be any limitations.

Substituting white sugar for dextrose etc, ratios...

I've always read that sucrose and dextrose are equal when dissolved in water, and that they can be substituted for equal weights when following recipes etc. I was just going through the malt yields on JP's page here, and based on what it says about sugar vs dextrose, dextrose doesn't actually...
