    Fizzy stout.

Thanks for this. The bottles don't appear to be over carbonated as the fizz on opening is not great. Having said that thanks. Which carbonating calculator did you use and can you send me a link to it please.

    Fizzy stout.

I have recently brewed a stout and found the head is very frothy. So much so that i need a 2nd glass to pour half the beer into. The grain bill is 4kg Munich, 500g of chocolate and biscuit malts and 300g of rolled oats, Safale s-04 yeast. Bottled 28th May. 6g per 500ml conditioning sugar. I...

    bottle priming

Hi The quantity of priming sugar depends how much fizz you want. 5g/500Ml will produce a gentle fizz while 8g a satisfying fizz when opening the bottle and pleasant bubble. Much more than that and you run the risk of blowing bottle tops. When you have decanted your batch ready for bottling and...

    Help please?

Hi Lisa Your mint and lime drink sounds great. I brew all grain and make cider and make Pommeau from some of the cider. Pommeau being a blend of cider apple juice and calvados. Unfortunately I don't have a still so instead use non-denatured alcohol. At around £4 a litre and 95% proof its a great...

    Hello from Germany

As you say it does become a bit of an obsession. The books are a great way in to brewing without complicated jargon. The important thing is to enjoy the process of brewing as much as sharing the results with friends. This forum is full of advice, of varying quality! Search the threads for a...

    Hello from Germany

A large plastic bucket is all you need to ferment in. I have a stainless fermenter, all nice and shiny but way more expensive and does the same job. I think your assessment of the all in one brewers is correct. I'm sure they all come out of the same factory and get branded, so go for the least...

    Hello from Germany

Hi, welcome to the forum. If you are new I would highly recommend treating yourself to a 30l microbrewery. They cost between £350 - £500 but as you mash and boil all in one machine it saves on space and you can control the temperatures and times very accurately. I bought one of these...

Can I have you attenuation please!

I'll heat some water this evening and check against a separate thermometer. Thanks for your reply.

Can I have you attenuation please!

A hydrometer measures current specific gravity of a given liquid. It can be used in any liquid at any time, assuming ambient temperature. It is convenient in brewing to determine the conversion of sugar to alcohol.

Can I have you attenuation please!

Using the thermometer built into the microbrewery. Admittedly I have not checked temperature with a second thermometer. Recirculation using the recirculating pump in the microbrewery Ferment for 3 weeks. Determining fermentation complete as gravity stops dropping. Gravity drops over 2 weeks to...

Can I have you attenuation please!

Hi Ever since I have been using my 30L microbrewery I have an issue with attenuation that I hope someone can throw light on. I treat the water to get Ph of 5.5 and calcium around 80ppm. My liquors are 17L for mash, 12L for sparge. Mash temperature around 66C I use around 5Kg of grain; at the...

Best Malt for Brewdog Punk IPA clone

I don't think age of your marbles is an issue, just make sure they are sterile before using. Whatever you do, don't lose your marbles!

    2020 Cider season

Bumper year for apples and added another supply. Net result first use of 120L FV. After milling and pressing managed to get 100L of juice. OG 1.042 but should ferment to 1.005 assuming the cold weather last couple of nights hasn't killed the yeast. Will filter into other 120L FV before adding...

Best Malt for Brewdog Punk IPA clone

Thanks for the comprehensive reply; mush appreciated. I like the idea of using the infuser for dry hopping. I just use a sterilised muslin bag filled with hops and sterilised glass beads to weigh the hops down. Where I have been failing is in the volume of hops I have been using. Clearly I...

    Selling homemade cider

My understanding is that if you sell cider to the public you will need to apply for a licence from HMRC regardless of volume you produce. If you expect to produce less than 7000L you can apply for a duty exemption. Additionally you will need to obtain a premises licence from your local...
