Revocation of reply capability, notification, forum transparency.

I notice that I have neen censored, without notice, and cannot reply to a thread. Why is this? I'm assuming "chippy tea" has got the hump about being disagreed with, but of course ICBW.

    A demijohn bung, or lid.

Hope this is OK here in "General Home Brew Equipment Discussion". If not, please can it be moved appropriately? I have an old brown demijohn, which I'd like to make some sloe gin in, from sloes I froze a month or two ago. The top has an external screw thread. I have no cap for it! Can I get a...

    Online 26mm crown cap purchase.

Last lot was 500 bought in March, £4 plus £3 postage. Vendor has no stock now. Plain wanted, any colour. Any pointers? EBay prices, unless I've missed a cheap listing, are quite high. I have seen people selling very ordinary single, used beer bottle caps for £1.20! Some sell. Truly bizarre.

    "Inside the Factory".

If you have a TV licence, 8 o'clock TONIGHT has "Cider ... Gregg Wallace visits the biggest cider factory in the world, which produces more than 350 million litres each year. Cherry Healey explores how the factory is creating new orchards of a sweet apple variety called Scrumptious. And...

Brewing in 2L bottles, absolute minimum effort required.

So. I have been brewing experimental 'orribles in 2L bottles for a little while. Some turns out OK, some would be "an acquired taste". Hm. A subject for later. This question is about the initial brew process only, with regard to absolute minimum effort. If I gather together the ingredients...

    What is it about tea?

This with supermarket (might happen with other) apple juice. So I had half a 2L bottle of AJ, yeast, nutrient, citric acid and sugar sitting there fermenting, as it has been since yesterday early evening, and two hours ago I tip in half a pot of stewed tea, leaving (!) 3½" (0.0889m) headroom...

    Oh dear, minor bottling error.

Bottled up the 25L that's been on the kitchen floor since Nov 11th. OG 1.043, 1.5kg sugar, FG 0.995. Sterilised everything, primed the bottles (2L PET recycled), siphoned. Anyway, there was only enough for 11 1/2 bottles, so I thought "Oh, hang on, I'll do a 500ml glass bottle, and drink the...

    A Geordie "Winter Warmer" tin.

According to what I've read here, this'll be about 3.8%ABV, which I would not class as "Winter Warmer". Still, I've got one I bought a while ago, so I'd better deal with it. Something must be done, without going out and buying more stuff. In the cupboard I have some light and dark brown sugar...

Apple wine, to rack, or not to rack?

Ooh, apple wine! Lovely I've got some of that plipping away. If I can read what I wrote correctly, OG was 1.050 (Stardate unknown), and by Nov 1st it was 1.010, thgen I bunged in 3,75kg of sugar, giving 1.060, and on Nov 6th it had gone down to 1.042, now it'sstill plipping away on the dresser...

Oh, my! Was it really off?

I'm afreaid to say I am triping under the infliuence of something or ither, which is troublesome. Anyway, I have been brewing "stuff" as well as anything e;lse, in 2L PET oottles on top of the range, where it's warm. When they are "done", I either drink them, or bottel them up for later/...

    Bottle bother!

Oh, no! I bottled some cider from garden apples, into 23 empty, clean 2L PET bottles, which used to contain "Crofters" cider. I put 2 (measuring) teaspoons of sugar in each bottle, wanting a slight sparkle but not a huge fizz. The bottles stood for a few days on some boards on top of the...

Apple juice extraction efficiency, & methods.

Years ago, I used to squish apples, laboriously, with a 6x6 baulk of oak. This for fermenting on pulp, for CJJB's apple wine. Hard work, apples not pressed. My dad had one of those blade-in-a-bucket things, driven by an electric drill, the choppings then being pressed. From the little I saw of...

Note on apple pressing (extra recovery).

While pressing some apples, I started thinking about the pulp I was throwing away. As an experiment, I took a cake of pressed pulp, put it in a large pail, and broke it up, then stirred in water to cover. The result I re-pressed, obtaining a rather dilute mix with a specific gravity of 1.023...

Cidre into 2l bottles (glass and plastic).

I've got some cider from garden and other apples that needs bottling, and some 2l PET bottles, and some 2l glass "ear jugs" (used to contain Weston's "Old Rosie"), with alumininium caps. The bottles, I take it, would just need sterilising, and a couple of tsp of priming sugar adding (2l bottles...

Is there a special forum place for brewing 'orrible stuff in bottles...

...or is here OK? I am brewing 'orrible stuff in PET 2l cider bottles. Anyone else doing this? I am attaching a picture of some bottles of the 'orrible stuff. I have some bottled, and a few on the range keeping warm and fermenting (or carbonating). The latest is stronger than usual, 'cos I am...

    Sloe gin - jar warning.

I wanted to make up some sloe gin, so I looked around for recipes. On the Kilner website, I found a recipe which also recommended Kilner clip-top jars (now made in China), so I bought a couple (1.8l, facetted, look nice) and proceeded. Unfortunately the seals leaked quite badly, depositing a...

    Cider in progress, advice?

I pressed some apples, and pasteurised/bottled some of the juice, and used more of the juice to make cider. Procedure was in all cases to extract the juice, add a couple of ground campden tablets to prevent excess oxidation, and pectolase to clear, wait overnight, siphon off and fermend. It's...

    Hi!

Hi! I've just registered, 'cos I have an interest in (re) starting home brewing operations various, after a long time off. I started with C J J Berry's "First Steps in Winemaking", and have progressed but little, although more recently, with enthusiasm. I am still not very technical, and numbers...
