    How long in the fv?

I recommend 2 weeks in primary, then rack to a secondary, flushed with co2 if you have it, to stop any oxidation. If you can then crash cool it, it will drop clear ready to bottle. Finings can be added a few days before bottling if you wish to have a truly bright beer. A week at 0 degrees brings...

anyone used worcester hop shop ?

Always been good service and good quality when I've used them. I tend to use the malt miller now tho, since the malt is from a better supplier (WHS were selling Bairds and my efficiency went down alarmingly) I often bought a 25kg sack at same time as hops to offset the delivery charges.

What's the highest volume co2 for ordinary brown beer bottle

Cheers mate. Loving the picture you got going on your profile. Looks like my mates mrs! :D

What's the highest volume co2 for ordinary brown beer bottle

I've brewed a Duvel clone, and I want to get the carbonatoion up to 3.5 to 4 volumes. Question is, will the ordinary brown bottles take the pressure? It finished at 1.006, so no residual fermentables to worry about. Cheers folks

Does any one know if Cedaronics / Thermofix is still trading

You've all summed it up perfectly. It's a shame a business that puts customers first is one that gets strangled by red tape. Tim, if you're reading this, good luck with ebay or whatever. Now then, I'll have to try and make my own, and it's valentines day.

Does any one know if Cedaronics / Thermofix is still trading

I bought a skeleton STC 1000 enclosure from Tim at thermofix last year. I now need another one, but his website says it's temporarily not working, and its said this since late last year. I seem to remember he had been poorly, I hope he's ok? Does anyone know whats happening, or indeed where I...

    Using multiple finings

Irish moss 15 mins from end of boil. I use 1 tablet of protofloc for 50l brew length. Then, after fermentation has finished in the primary, I rack into a secondary with 20ml of finings adjunct per 25l of beer. This gets crash cooled to drop out any yeast, and also brings out any chill haze...

What to use as filter before plate chiller

Fil, I like the idea of separate sanitation. I've been using star San for ages, and I sometimes do run the chiller and pipe work for 10 mins recirculating a star San solution. I've just bought a mag coupled pump from mr lard , so I've been trying it out in lots of variations, and pumping...

What to use as filter before plate chiller

Lots of interesting ideas there. I am now more determined than ever to sort this one out. I had the worst brewday ever today. I've been planning today's brew for weeks, my first lager. (Pilsner Urquell, so strictly speaking a Pilsner). The starter has been stepped up 3 times, and everything...

What to use as filter before plate chiller

Thanks for the ideas. How big are the holes on the #30 and #40 mesh? The y strainer I've seen has 1mm mesh, which may be too large to stop the bits that might end up stuck inside the plate chiller. I enquired about a proper pump protection strainer, with wire wedge basket, but cost was well...

What to use as filter before plate chiller

I was just wondering what other folks use to filter trub or hop material prior to passig wort through a plate chiller. I currently use a false bottom on my kettle, with a stainless scourer beneath that covering the bottom outlet. I still get small bits passing into the PC. Would a small...

    repriming bottles.

How many bottles have you opened? Sometimes the odd bottle doesn't prime. If you add too much, you may end up with an uncontrollable fizzy bottle that just pours as fizz. Try another bottle from a different part of the batch

How to use the Tesco Value kettle heating element - mark II

The little disc in the centre is a boil dry safety cut out. It will not turn off the element at boiling point, so it's worth leaving it in there. It certainly does no harm. The other disc is the one that controls the element, and you've quite rightly removed it with the rest of the moulding...

    American Style Fridge Conversion

The funny thing is, the mrs said she didn't want it, that's why I've got it. I reckon you're right tho, I'm going to flog it and buy a small fridge, I might even get enough for it to buy a couple of shiney things. I see what they mean when they call it the dark side. :drink:

    American Style Fridge Conversion

I just inherited this lovely big american fridge freezer by LG. Its a bit too good to be true, but i got it for free, instead of a standard undercounter fridge i was expecting to get. I was going to build a fermentation fridge with an STC 1000 out of the undercounter fridge. But now this beast...

Where do you get your ingredients from?

+1 for Worcester Hop Shop and Malt Miller for ingredients. For equipment, you can't go far wrong with Hop & Grape. They've even started their own range of 'shiney' brew kettles and suchlike. I'm saving like a b*****d to get my hands on some of their insulated brew pots.

Anything wrong with putting a lid & airlock on primary fv?

Thanks for all your posts, it seems to be down to personal preference, and since my system seems to work well for me, I'll stick with a lid and airlock. Funnily enough, I lost a kit brew years ago to a fruit fly due to a missing lid on an fv, but that's another story. All my fv's are same...

Anything wrong with putting a lid & airlock on primary fv?

I have somehow got into the habit of putting a lid and an airlock on my primary fermenter. But recently toured my local brewery (Skinners in Truro) and all their fv's were open. Question is, am I doing something wrong if I put a lid and airlock on? Tis ale i'm brewing Happy new year

How do you remove odours from plastic casks??

All 3 answers sound good. Not only nice and cheap, but probably hanging around in the kitchen. I reckon I'll need a lot of lemons though! I'll try all 3 I think. See what happens. Thanks guys
