‘O’ Rings for Grainfather conical fermenter

I was putting the dual valve tap for the conical fermenter together yesterday. There are three o rings on the part that lifts. The middle one is like a silicone rubber and the two outer ones are like a nylon hard plastic. The two hard ones have broken, so can’t be used. Since it didn’t...

    Electric cars.

On peak, off peak, when it’s gone it’s gone. When the lights go out it will be time to reflect on the wisdom of all this.

    Wine in Beer bottles, capped.

Has anybody done it? What would be the downside. Wine bottles are difficult to acquire and then the choice is cork or plastic closures. More plastic I’m not keen on, cork, risk of failure and not that cheap anymore. So apart from the aesthetics, what would be the downside?

    Keeping wine in a barrel

I want to get ahead with the wine. I don’t have the bottles for another batch, so I’m wondering if I can keep it in a barrel with a tap. Standard plastic barrel. I can’t see how that would work with no gas. Is there a solution?

    How to make sweet cider

So the last tree harvested yesterday came out at 1062. I want to have a go at making sweet cider with this. Can someone point me to a good video or explain the process please.

    What’s in the juice?

So I’m doing this wine kit at present. I’m wondering if the juice is actually Cabernet. No reason to think otherwise, nothing on the packaging/ingredients to say it’s mixed with something. What are the thoughts on this?

    The safety of PET bottles

What do people think of using PET bottles in terms of the possible health implications?

How do you fill a bottle filler?

So I got everything ready for bottling some cider. I had brought a bottle filler with hoses included. This may sound really daft, but I can’t figure out how to fill this bottle filler ready for syphoning. I did eventually manage, but I’m pretty sure there is an easy way. I assumed that I would...

    Wine fermenting temperature

I’ve got this Cabernet in the fermenter now. It hasn’t started to ferment yet. Anyway, I’ve been trying to decide what temperature would be best for it. The kit says between 20 -25c. Doing a little reading, it looks like the wine will be drier and fuller bodied with a higher temperature...

To stir or not to stir?

I started my first kit wine yesterday. Followed the instructions, but it did not mention anything about stirring or mixing the juice. Well, it did, it said not to, but that was for the pitching of yeast. My problem is this: I put the concentrate in the fermenter. Added water to 23lts. Took a...

    Whether to use Campden tablets

This goes through my mind every time I rack something. Should I use campden tabs each time I open the brew, either to rack or take a gravity reading or whatever. What are the chances of infection, what is the best way forward in this. I have just never been able to get to the bottom of it...

    Bottle or rack first

I have two five gallon barrels of cider that I think are ready. Stopped fermenting a few weeks ago. The cider is clear, and it tasted good, even at this point. My question is, should I rack it again or not. I can’t see any benefit. I fermented it in those barrels with the idea that I could...

    Help with bottling still cider

I’m not 100% sure how to go about this. I’m worried that will no primer, there will be no co2 to sit in the space at the top of the bottle. Is it just a case of filling the bottle to the top and capping for still cider? It was reading this a week ago.

    Crown cap sizes

I’ve been saving bottles, and have a bench crown capper on the way. I was wondering about the different size caps. Can someone explain how to determine the cap size required. Is it about measuring the bottle?

    Harvesting today

I have 3 Dabenett trees at the allotment. They are supposed to be ready end of October/November. They have been falling for a month. I’ve been collecting the good ones and mixing them with others. I really want a single variety, just the Dabenett. I tested one apple on the tree yesterday...

    Hops - Planting and feeding

I will be ordering some more hops shortly. Does anybody have advice on planting (planting, when /soil preparation /depth etc), and feeding requirements through the year.

Beer not coming out of the KK

The brew I put in the KK on the first of June does not want to come out. I thought I would see how it was doing yesterday. I tried to pour some into a glass, I got a huge rush of air, but no beer. So I topped up with CO2 same thing, just less of a rush. I am assuming the float has come adrift...

    Help finding a recipe.

I could do with some help finding a recipe, it will only be my second brew, and I am not at all sure about how to explain what I am looking for. Here goes. Appreciate any suggestions. I have Brewfather software. Session beer 3.5/4%. Not hugely hopped, but that almost fruity finish, that I find...

Will 40g of Columbus make a difference?

So my first AG order came with a 40g pack of Columbus which did not appear on the method. I call the supplier and asked about it, the reply was throw it in with the dry hop, it won’t make much difference. It sort of begs the question ‘why add 40 g of anything to anything’. Anyway, I was...
