    Commercial beer small keg

Sadly there is no such thing as Stella 4.8% anymore. Since November last year it is 4.6% and is the reason I started homebrewing again, to produce something more along the lines of the 5.2% stuff of my youth when it earned its nickname of wifebeater. I started my home bar with commercial kegs...

    Lager, NOT larger!

I can't bear to watch Masterchef anymore with John Torode saying things like, "You have to show Greg and I something really special." I have no problem with people using "me" when it should be "I" and frequently do so myself, but the other way around is affected nonsense trying to be clever...

    Are you a true Northerner

Surely only one question is needed - do you put gravy on your chips ?

    Gas

If you want to run it until empty, I'd get a sodastream bottle and adapter as backup. Then when it runs out you can connect the sodastream up to keep pouring until you go to the gas people to change the bottle over.

    Gas

If your bottle is at 4C then the pressure required to keep CO2 liquid is about 39 bar. So, if yours is down to 20 then it means there is no liquid CO2 left in cylinder and it will run out very quickly. The volume of the cylinder is roughly 12litres so you have about 0.5 kg of Co2 left.

Sensible first time keg advise sought

Have you tried Adams Gas - they are based in Kent but have stockists all over the country? They also do a 1.5Kg cylinder for £15.80 a refill which is about 4 sodastream bottle's worth and more or less as portable.

    Hot tub in winter

I know it's an old post, but it's getting towards that time of year and I had another idea. Rather than drain hot tub, just keep the filter going and let it go cold, but then have a way to heat it up really, really quickly if you decide one day you want to go in. I got this gas water heater from...

    Kegerator newbie set up help

The Magners cider kegs I drink use a Sankey type connector, but I believe Thatchers gold use Grundy. Since I got my first corny keg, they have multiplied and so what I do now is fill a corny from the Magners/Kirin/Strongbow kegs and then dispense from that. I can fit three cornies under my...

    Kegerator newbie set up help

Maltmiller has a video about the tap spring. The narrow end of the spring goes at the tap side. And regarding the secondary regulators - here is a pic of my setup where I have three. As people have said this allows different pressures for different things e.g. my lager is at 30 psi at the...

So I bought this Graham Wheeler book everybody bangs on about...

So you just need a quart flagon of stout for the yeast. Job done 😂 . I remember making CJJ Berry's wine recipes when I was 15. Still have a bottle from 1986 that I'm wondering when to sample. Back then I made the wines sweet so it's probably still drinkable.

Recommend me a low alcohol (1% or less) commercial brew

I quite often do dry January and last year even did dry September as well to add to the misery - mainly for weight control and to rest my liver from the rest of the year when I drink to excess most of the time. During these periods of abstinence I have tried many alcohol free beers. The best...

    Corny Scales

I'm planning to have a go at similar using this approach: Pi smart scale Mainly because I have an old Wii balance board gathering dust and having read through it seems no dismantling/wiring etc is needed. I'd also seen this one: hackster beer scales where they use cheap bathroom scales instead...

    iSpindel

Ditto - I have two now and might get a third. Very useful to monitor how the ferment is going without having to open the lid.

Grainfather Conical Fermenter Cooling Pump Kit

CWP100 It's an inline chiller, so you connect your keg out beer line to the input line and beer tap to the output line. I keep my kegs at ambient room temperature and the chiller copes no problem. The chiller has a tank of water that gets chilled down and the products flow in metal coils...

    iSpindel

I have two and on both I've had to put a bit of blue tack at the top near the lid to get within a degree of 25. I don't think it matters all that much as long as you calibrate with the sugar solutions. My latest one ranged from 71.1 degrees at 1.0880 to 23.8 at 1.0000 so a couple of degrees is...

Grainfather Conical Fermenter Cooling Pump Kit

I I have the cooler kit and I connect it to the recirculation water bath of my beer chiller. I also use the 12V output to the pump to switch my chiller on if needed via a relay. The water bath is around 1C and I find it can cool the fermenter down from 20C to 3C in an hour or so and then hold...

    Lagering advice

Thanks all for your input and advice. Yes I used Saflager 34/70. I used Irish Moss in the boil, so I've cranked the cooling up(down?) to 3C which is a low as I can get my conical with my beer cooler, and added some Youngs beer finings. My aim is really to get this to drinking stage and learn...
