5L mini kegs - can I fill and keep them like bottles?

Here begins the trial - one filled straight from the fermenter and carbed according to the tables (temp and pressure vs desired volume etc...) and one with a bit of added sugar to get things going. The unprimed one came out looking good but was pretty flat once the foam had died and I'm guessing...

flow control tap for mini keg

Ok, so I guess you just need enough gas to lift the beer out? I'd imagine that's only a very small amount. Are you leaving the gas pressure on all the time? If so, I reckon it will be carbonating the beer that's already carbed if that makes sense - ie too much. What happens if you open the tap...

Was it already carbed when you transferred it?

flow control tap for mini keg

When you say "commercial" Stella - what does that mean. Is that canned Stella poured into the keg....?

flow control tap for mini keg

Hi @Regfixit, I'm just starting on a similar journey but without the flow control tap. Just out of interest, what was your temp / pressure and timescale? I'm seeing lots of variation in my research....

    Great service from Malt Miller!!

Another thumbs up for Malt Miller - always helpful and well packaged goods. thumb.. I've also used a few of their mini-mash kits when I'm restricted for time and they work out well.

    5ltr growler kegs

Hi Hoppyscotty - looks as if you're on the same journey as me! I got a load of good advice in this thread..... https://www.thehomebrewforum.co.uk/threads/5l-mini-kegs-can-i-fill-and-keep-them-like-bottles.93754/ I've ordered mine from the same place - but just with the Mango Jack keg. Probably...

5L mini kegs - can I fill and keep them like bottles?

Agreed, I think that's the way to go. I can picture the rabbit hole already as two kegs surely won't be enough......:coat: !

5L mini kegs - can I fill and keep them like bottles?

I'd guess that the headspace on a natural carbonation builds up a cushion of CO2? Just like boating would be my line of thought. Happy to be corrected though!

5L mini kegs - can I fill and keep them like bottles?

Thanks, good point. However, would that matter if I force carb'd again? Or doesn't it work like that?

5L mini kegs - can I fill and keep them like bottles?

Hi, Option 3 was with a glass demijohn so maybe just a stopper / ferm lock then decant into a mini keg. If you mean 2a) then yes. And possibly top up with CO2 to make it flow.

5L mini kegs - can I fill and keep them like bottles?

Thanks Galena, That's helpful and kind of what I thought but wasn't sure if I could rely on the ball lock posts making a permanent seal. Option 3 - I'm not sure I'd do that either unless anyone has succeeded in the past. I recall reading it somewhere as a suggestion and I have a couple lurking...

5L mini kegs - can I fill and keep them like bottles?

Hi all, New member - first question! Been brewing a mix of kits, mini mash and AG for a few years now and have always bottled which is becoming a pain in the proverbial. I'm looking at the S/S mini kegs like the Dark Farm ones with the CO2 charger / tap outlet - not the retail outlet type with...

    Newbie from Wilshire.....

Hi all, new member from the wilds of Wiltshire! Been brewing kits for a few years, went to whole grain then realised the slippery slope was becoming to much to handle so reverted back to mini mash kits and a stovetop setup. Actually realised that I just wanted some reasonable tasting beer out of...
