    Disappointing blueberry

My first attempt with blueberry hasn't been great so far. Medicinal taste. Leaving it for a while, but don't hold out much hope. It is only a small batch, maybe I'll try to use more fruit next time.

    Cider advice

Having the right apples is important for decent cider. I'm told the best cider apples are not that great to eat.

    Blackberry wine brewbitz recipe

If you can find the right open areas, even alongside roads (maybe not main roads), 6 or 8 lbs is viable around here. Next time I might top up with Aldi "wonky" or price matched blueberries if I'm just short a small amount.

    Bank's Bitter 89p (500ml)

Aldi do seem to be driving the price, the others seem to "match" Aldi - in which case, it does seem fair to buy it from Aldi when I can.

    Bank's Bitter 89p (500ml)

It's also cheaper than buying bottles - if you need some bottles, the beer is free.

    Apple Cider Vinegar.

I was told that %ABV converts to % acid - I have not separately verified this. I believe that the acidification stops when all the alcohol has been converted, as the alcohol is the fuel for the process. Mine doesn't seem to get more acid over time. I try to leave it several weeks, but as I make...

    Apple Cider Vinegar.

Mine tastes OK, I've been using it for over a year now and I'm happy with the taste. My family tell me it has more apple taste than the bought stuff, which is fine by me. I usually dilute it with warm or slightly hot water, which seems to bring out the taste more. Unpasteurised ACV is easily...

    Apple Cider Vinegar.

"I make a turbo cider then leave it open to the air." To clarify, I actually use an open top jar with a paper kitchen towel across the top, held in place by a rubber band, to keep flies and dust out but allow microbes and air in.

    Apple Cider Vinegar.

I make a turbo cider then leave it open to the air. Might add some from the last brew. But this is for my consumption - a bl**dy sight cheaper than the shop stuff. And I prefer the taste.

    Cider advice

I make turbo cider, made a few batches now. Just using juice, usually Lidl or Aldi, I find it works but it's a bit bland. I usually add a couple of Bramley or Granny Smith apples to the initial ferment (gallon) , chopped, frozen then liquidised, with some pectolase (when I remember), plus a mug...

    Why Doesn't Cider Go Off?

That’s pretty much the traditional method so, whatever it is, it’s been working for a long time!

    Hard Rubbish Day!

I have heard several stories recently about people getting fined for putting unwanted stuff outside their houses. And some councils get really sh*tty if your rubbish doesn't all fit in the bin or the lid doesn't close properly. We have to provide proof of residence to use the tip, and if we see...

    Smart meter [poll]

When the meter messages me to say that there’s a draught by my front door and I could save £5 a month if I fixed it, then I’ll believe the stuff about money saving. Otherwise I hear so many stories about issues that I lack confidence that they have fully got their act together. So I’ll hang on...

Bottle Topped... Has anyone tried it?

I was given such a kit, and was quite happy with the beer. It is a faff for just one gallon, but interesting. The fermenting bucket that came with it has gone on to several more brews and is currently hosting a freshly started gallon of blackberry wine.

    Old Rosie 2L bottles

To follow up, I eventually managed to get a 2l Rosies (Tesco were sold out, I got Morrison's last one). The original cap was actually faulty and wouldn't go back on, but I had some of the size be;low and they fit perfectly. Mine are for a pourer bottle that I use for apple cider vinegar, but the...

    Old Rosie 2L bottles

I would say there is a good chance. There is a market in plastic screw caps, I have bought several recently. If you google "plastic bottle closure" or something similar, you will get a number of hits, or search on Ebay. You will need to measure the outside thread diameter. If you have a wine...

Cheating at Chess with Anal Beads

Going into engineer mode (only briefly, honest) I struggle to see how it would work. Unlike card games, you can see exactly where your opponent's pieces are. What you need to know is what's in his (in this instance) mind, and I can't see how a buzzer up your bum achieves this. I imagine that...

Best way to get a label off a bottle

Some bottles you still can, Banks' for instance. Usually need to use a plastic scourer to get the last of the adhesive off. Otherwise very hot water in bottle and carefully peel it off, as above. To remove adhesive I use the sticky label remover that you can buy, it's smelly but the the smell...
