    Vienna Lager Water Profile

Thanks for that, I was looking at target profiles with more specific numbers but I'm guessing anything in the middle those ranges should hit the mark. On a bit of a tangent, is calcium carbonate (chalk) ok to use as an additive? I have been trying to avoid it because the solubility is so poor...

    Vienna Lager Water Profile

Hi Can anyone recommend me a water profile for a Vienna(ish) pseudo-lager please? Brewfather doesn't have anything specific for this style and the default lager profile feels a little neutral for what I'm aiming for, see below. Looking to make an easy drinking, fairly malty beer with medium...

    Water addition substitutes

Hi Hopefully a silly question but I'm taking my first tentative steps into water profiles and was curious about substituting additives. Say I need to add Ca2+ Mg2+ SO4 and HCO3 to my water, does it matter where those ions come from? For example, to add SO4 ions, I can use either Gypsum (CaSO4)...

    Brewfather - Maischfest 35L

Possibly wrongly, I take dead space to mean any water involved in the mash that isn’t in direct contact with the grain, so that would include the water under the basket, and that between the grain tube and the edge of the vessel too in theory. It probably gets a bit complicated when the water in...

    Brewfather - Maischfest 35L

Sorry it’s a month late but these are the numbers I use for my 30L model. Since the 35L just adds height and not width they should be mostly the same. Following a disastrous stuck mash and even worse stuck sparge, I have deliberately gone quite high on the dead space to make some accommodation...

    Help identifying off flavour

I’ll wait it out and see then I guess, looks like it could be any of a number of things from the very useful document kindly shared above. Don’t know about giving it a year mind you. That’s a full 50 weeks longer than a beer has ever managed to survive in my house without being drunk. I’ll give...

    Help identifying off flavour

Hi My first AG brew is now a week post bottling and following a quick sample to see how it's getting on I've hit a flavour I'm having trouble identifying. It's quite hard to describe, I guess I'd say it was sort of nutty and a bit inky (think the Parker pens you used to use at school), perhaps...

    DeepThought’s first ever AG brewday

Just completed my first ever AG brewday and thought it only polite to share. The recipe was a simple one, a cascade SMaSH pale ale, grain bill 5kg of maris otter. Armed with several hours of YouTube viewing under my belt, a Klarstein Maischfest with added pump and some misplaced optimism about...

    Pump recommendation

Silly question but what sort of hose clips did you use on the pump connectors? The 10-16mm ones I picked up in ToolStation are absolutely useless on 8x12mm silicon hose. By the time I tighten them down to the right diameter they turn distinctly rugby ball shaped and just pinch it from two sides...

    Pump recommendation

I was playing with the idea of using a capacitor to even out the voltage across the PWM duty cycle, or even just bypassing the electronical gubbins entirely and driving the motor direct from the PWM . A model railway speed controller sounds a lot simpler though.

    Pump recommendation

I went for the black one in the end, predominately because the DC connector makes for much easier wiring than a JST connector of unspecified quality, and the price difference was negligible on eBay. For anyone visiting this thread from the future, the beige ones are half the eBay price on...

New member from the south coast

The only local guy now to my knowledge is GetBrewing in Portsmouth. Bit of a trek but I work in town so not an issue for me. He’s in the Bridge shopping centre which is attached to Asda in Fratton. I’m in SO31 too, Warsash to be precise.

Hi I’m close to Fareham, just by the river Hamble. Keeping things simple to start off, have a single hop pale ale recipe worked out that should at least work on paper. I’ll probably have a few goes at getting that one right before moving on to other things.

    Pump recommendation

Sounds like you might be describing this one: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3M-Head-12V-100-C-Solar-Hot-Water-Circulation-Pump-Food-Grade-Silent-Coupler-/154245264818?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49286&mkrid=710-127635-2958-0 Does the hearing aid beige look familiar? If so I’d...

    Pump recommendation

I assumed it was an external pump, or at least could be used as one as there’s an inlet and outlet pipe on it (going by the picture at least anyway). This was just the cheapest thing on ebay that looked vaguely suitable but I’m open to suggestions. For what it’s worth I haven’t been doing AG at...

    Pump recommendation

Hi all Looking for an inexpensive recirculating pump to attach to a Klarstein Maischfest. I’m pretty clueless at this stage so would appreciate any advice you can give. Would something like this fit the bill and be able to handle mash out temperatures...

New member from the south coast

Hi all New user on the Hampshire coast here, so I thought it only polite to say hello before I start bombarding you with stupid questions. My experience to date is only with kits but the nice man in my local brew shop has talked me into me to going down the all-grain/malt extract rabbit hole...
