    Auto Syphon

FWIW, I had exactly this happen when kegging my Razorback - there was a dense stream of fine bubbles coming up the auto-syphon. I was worried that I would end up with a ruined brew but it's now been in the garage for near enough a month and is as fresh as a daisy with lovely grapefruity flavour...

    Heater trays..

For be fair, a mate uses one open loop when the weather gets cooler and seems happy with that. However, I would rather have something temperature controlled - whether that's a tray or a water bath - to give a more controlled fermentation. _

    Heater trays..

To add a contrary viewpoint, I have a tray and I'm happy with it, but I control it with an STC1000 with the temperature sensor taped to the side of the FV behind some foam. This allows me to keep the wort at 20-21*C during fermentation - provide the ambient temperature isn't too high, of course. _

    Brupaks, Fixby Gold Review

I'm now about a third of the way through one of these. I didn't originally order this kit but was offered it instead of the Golden Stag, which was out of stock. I made a hop tea with the hop bag, boiling it for 10 minutes, and fermented it for 14 days @ 20 degrees before kegging it. I'm guessing...

    Wherry: Quick Question

+1. A really nice pint now - just a shame that I'm over half way through it!

    Re: Festival Razorback IPA Review

I've just bought a batch of kits that includes both the Razorback and Raja's Reward - but I've put the Fixby Gold on first, ready for some late summer quaffing - so I'll be watching for reviews of both in the meantime to pick up any tips before they go on... _

    Festival Landlords Best Bitter Review

Depends. Mine's been in the barrel for quite a while - the problem wasn't not clearing, it was chill haze from it being too cold in the garage - and it is a lovely pint now. However, if you wanted to drink it a bit younger, I would have gone a bit easier on the hops. The hop flavour was a bit...

    Festival Landlords Best Bitter Review

Well, I've been having the odd QC sample. It's taken a long time to clear - it's just about there now after ~4 weeks in the garage - but it actually tasted pretty good even when it wasn't completely clear. Now it is a lovely pint: nicely hoppy with a good level of bitterness; in fact, it is...

    Festival Landlords Best Bitter Review

Just kegged this last night and, having tried the contents of the trial jar, I'm hopeful that this will be a cracker. There's a reasonable amount of bitterness but not to the extent of the Pilgrim's Hope, and the hop aroma, while a little over the top at the moment, should mellow a bit during...

    Muntons - Old English Bitter

A quick update after another week: the taste is definitely filling out now - and there's a hint of wheat beer to it. The problem I'm now facing is that my garage is too cold so the beer has absorbed all the CO2 and there isn't enough pressure to serve the beer. Hopefully it'll warm up a bit over...

    Muntons - Old English Bitter

Mine's been conditioning in the keg for just over a week and my impressions from a QC sample has been that the initial flavour profile is good - though I wouldn't mind a bit more bitterness in a "bitter" - but it all washes away a bit quickly; it just seems a bit thin. Hopefully that will...

    Consistent pressure for a cheapo

I've started wondering whether something like this couldn't be done with this; anyone tried it? _

New to this - "Woodforde's Wherry Real Ale" kit

I use bottled water for my brews and have found that upending the bottles and pouring from a height of a few inches gives plenty of froth (so hopefully plenty of oxygen in the wort). I've certainly not had any problems this way. Yes, that is what the kit says though I was advised by a home...

    Fermenting temprature

I have a tray rather than a belt but I control it using an STC-1000. The temperature sensor is held against the outside of the FV by some foam taped to the bucket and I've got it set to turn the tray on when the brew drops to 20.5 degrees and turn it off once it hits 21 degrees. The second brew...

    Keeping fermentation warm during winter?

I've just done a brew in the utility room which, at this time of year, varies between 16 and 18 Celsius. I bought a fermenting tray and controlled it with an STC-1000. Out of interest, I plugged it in via power meter and, over 3 weeks (2 weeks primary and 1 week secondary), it used 5.8 units to...

    Festival, Pilgrims Hope Review

Put this one in the FV on 25th October: my first brew with a fermentation mat and an STC-1000 to keep the temperature in the range 21*C +/- 0.5. Took the first sample yesterday and it's down to 1.010ish so will probably keg it some time this week. A quick sip from the sample jar was very...

    Now supplying STC-1000 instruments only

That is a good price from Cedaronics. I just bought one off eBay a couple of weeks back and paid £18 from a UK seller. Mine now looks very much like tazuk's (except black and the use of simple grommets where the mains cables go into/out of the box). I've fitted a 3A fuse as I'm only...

    Woodfordes Nog Review

My Nog has now been conditioning for a couple of weeks now. It did not have a easy birth. Firstly, during fermentation we had a brief spell where the temperature shot up so the wort temperature was over 24 degrees. After just over 2 weeks in the FV (it went bonkers for the first 24-48 hours and...

    (Yet) another noob brewer

Hello all! I recently took the plunge into home brewing with Woodfordes Wherry, which is now drinking - very successfully, I might add. I put a Nog into the FV at the weekend - expecting cooler weather - and am worrying that the temperature is too high, so we'll see what results! Anyway, got a...
