Brains Merlin's Oak and Longdog Lamplight Porter

Hi Guys, Firstly, apologies for raking up this old post.... I don't come by this way very often but today I thought I'd have a look and see what's happening. I was very pleased to see that my Lamplight Porter has been enjoyed by someone on this forum. Thanks Kevin for the great feedback...

    Anyone bought one of these?

A friend of mine has one and I have a 6 barrel commercial brewery made by the same company. The quality is excellent as is the beer from it  If it's for a pilot brewery for dialing in recipes and just helping you to understand the process prior to going for something bigger then I'd...

The Cheshire Brewhouse a Much Bigger Build than Bridestone

My advice would be to make sure you have an understanding or enthusiastic other half. Preferably one who can pay the mortgage for a while! Setting up is not that tough but I didn't build the kit from scratch like UP did. I would imagine that would be great fun but a right royal pain in the...

The Cheshire Brewhouse a Much Bigger Build than Bridestone

Good work mate. I made the step up to 6 barrels myself almost exactly a year ago and it's been great. Still need to sell more beer but great fun all the same. Good luck with everything. Phil.

    Newbies micro brewery frame dimensions

That'll do fine. You'll find it holds its temperature better once there's grain in there anyway. Looking good :thumb:

    Blichmann Bottling Gun

I have one and it's great for bottling from a corny although I tend to bottle from the cask now with just a foot of tubing on the tap.

Saw this and thought of You!

Does look good. My only concern would be the 3kw element. Somewhat powerful for RIMS I feel. So long as you could guarantee the flow of wort being high enough without compacting the mash this could actually work rather well. /Phil.

    Constructing a mash tun

The "H" manifold was originally my HERMS return manifold. I used to use a spinny sparge arm until that broke. Now I do indeed use the "H" manifold as my sparge arm. There are loads of ways to sparge. I've seen people just lay a return tube on top of the mash. It wouldn't be my choice though...

    Constructing a mash tun

Why, thank you young man   /Phil.

    Santitation Disaster!

You'll be fine. The raw, unfermented wort is very susceptible to infection but once the yeast have done their thing the beer's pretty stable. So long as you didn't aerate it too much you'll be ok. I'd second the advice above about drinking it quickly just in case though, but that would be...

How I made My HERMS heat exchangers

I'm really only guessing at the flow. I suppose one of these days 'll have to measure it as I get asked that question a lot. I guess the real answer should be that the flow rate is fast enough to allow me to raise the mash temperature to mash out within 10 minutes but not so fast that I get a...

How I made My HERMS heat exchangers

I don't measure it but it looks like about 5-7 litres per minute. I could probably go faster but I don't see the need to push my luck really. /Phil.

How I made My HERMS heat exchangers

I don't really find that I lose any temperature between the HE and the mash tun. Possiby because the silicone tubing is a good (enough) insulator. Possibly because the flow rate is fast enough that it doesn't have time to lose much heat. Whatever. For me, the PSB parameter is only really...

    Full Tower Brewery setup

Should be interesting when it's finally released. I hope they've improved the sparge arms though as mine fell apart the second time I used it :( I think this country has long needed someone to produce a complete brewery a la Morebeer. I'm just not sure people will pay for it. There still...

    Chappo's new brew rig

Hi Chappo, I was looking at this on the Aussie forum this morning. Very nice piece of kit. Well done  /Phil.

Fermenters whats the best and why

I use a conical fermenter that I've adapted to heat and cool. It's controlled by an ATC800. I also use two stainless sankey style kegs with the tops cut out and a ball valve fitted to the bottom. So far I've only rigged them up to heat as my garage is so cold I don't have to worry about...

    New Graham Wheeler

20 odd years ago when I was learning this hobby I found the old book(s) a great source of recipes and information. For this I am greatful to GW and no other book really cut the mustard (IMO). I recently brewed one that I recalled had turned out very well. Unfortunately it was overly bitter...
