    Northern Ireland Noob

Welcome, there are a few of us from NI on the forum now, hopefully home brewing is starting to gain popularity here. As for your questions, yes if you add less water to the kit than suggested you will have a higher alcohol content. You are also concentrating the flavours so it will be stronger...

Too much headroom, what to do?

I'm also not convinced it's a major issue, I use 23 litre fv's for 15 litre batches and have been for quite a while.

    Connecting an element

The 2 prongs sticking up with the red bit on them, that's your element so connect live to one and neutral to the other, doesn't matter which way round. Then the screw in the middle is earth :thumb:

    Oxi Clean

As mentioned above, use tesco ashbeck water, it works a treat with starsan. :thumb:

    BIAB Sparge?

Have a look at this thread, lots of info on that topic :D. viewtopic.php?f=36&t=45361

THE BEST ELEMENT FOR THE JOB

That's another option, a bit more complicated wiring though for those not too confident with electrics.

THE BEST ELEMENT FOR THE JOB

I use one of these http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/290946873721?na ... ING_ACTIVE It can be controlled via a voltage regulator or preferably a ssr with potentiometer.

Wow liquid bread  Strangely I actually like the sound of that! Keep us posted, I'm intrigued

Just cant work out a Hyd

You've posted in the beer section so I'm assuming it is a beer and not a wine, in which case it's unlikely to drop as far as 1.000. Generally you can bottle when the fermentation has stopped, when the hydrometer reading doesn't change for a few days. Somewhere between 1.006 and 1.014 is fairly...

    Question about lactose

Ok so I'll maybe go for about 100-150g then, I don't want to add any flavours. I had a bit of trouble with mash temperature so my Old Ale finished lower than expected. I just want to add a little sweetness and body.

Wiring my PID controller for electric BIAB

The incoming live will be broke through the fuse, just before the switch. 3kw is about 13 amps so I'd use a 16 amp fuse in it. Wire it all with 2.5mm cable, which is good for 25 amps :thumb:

Wiring my PID controller for electric BIAB

You could either wire it into a fused spur or put an inline fuse in your control panel, like this http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/180538156399 Oh and always best to have an rcd on the circuit when near water.

    SG of RGJ vs Sugar.

Your calculations are indeed correct :hmm: I'm assuming the grape juice wasn't at 60°c when you tested it :D That's odd. The carton does say "typical" analysis which suggests it varies, but that's quite a large difference.

    Question about lactose

Awesome :thumb: Can I ask how you worked that out? Did you just plug the numbers into brewing software?

Is it worth getting a bottle tree/rinser

That's exactly what I use :thumb:

    Question about lactose

Does anyone know how I can work out how much lactose to add after fermentation to reach my desired fg? Basically I want to back-sweeten 8 litres of beer from 1.010 to around 1.017 or so. Any help would be much appreciated.

    How do you strike?

Connect a hose from the tap of the HLT to the tap on your mash tun, open the taps and let fly. As long as the MT is lower than the HLT it will be gravity fed.

    AG#9 Munich Dunkel

I love the simplicity of this recipe. I've never used Munich malt or even tried a Munich beer, what's it like?

    How do you strike?

I tried under-letting for the first time a couple of brews ago and wouldn't go back, definitely much easier and more consistent.

Is it worth getting a bottle tree/rinser

I'm with LeithR on this one, I can't see how it would benefit me. When I pour a beer the bottle gets brushed, rinsed, good spray with starsan then capped with a little square of tin foil. Then on bottling day I give each bottle a shake, remove cap, pour out excess starsan and fill. I don't faff...
