ABV: Professionally tested v home-brew calculations

Has anyone ever sent their home-brew off to these companies offering "professional” calculation of the ABV? I have no knowledge of this but note from a few American forums that the average professionally calculated ABV's usually come back up to 2/3 degrees lower than the home-brew calculations...

    that stupid homebrew taste

I only do extract and kit brewing and I live in a 18th cottage. So not being a modern insulated house I found the main problem was maintaining a constant temperature throughout not just the fermenting but the 2/3 weeks of storing in a warm place thereafter aswell. It seems beer can be very...

Too frothy to get out of bottles

Yes you have cracked it many thanks after a load of research and looking on the American forums I realise I have made a mistake. I bottled too soon with these American style beers 2 weeks even at a controlled stable temp is just not enough. My second brew a Young's American Amber ale is now 3...

Too frothy to get out of bottles

Just made 40 bottles of American Pale Ale in clear plastic PET bottles they are ready to drink with the expected sediment on the bottom the beer is crystal clear but as soon as I open one the rush mixes the sediment up again and it pours cloudy. Very annoying I have tried gently and slowly...

How long can you delay adding yeast?

A simple question really how long can you delay adding the yeast? I appreciate its normally after the wort and temperature are ready etc but just as I was about to add my yeast life took over and I find myself with wort that's two days old still waiting for its yeast. Is it still ok to add the...

Adding another kg of malt to a kit

I just love the new Bulldog kits with 4kg of malt in they have a fantastic "body" to them just wondered if its possible to add 1kg of malt to normal British kits would this achieve the same result? Would the yeast need to be doubled as again the bulldog kits seems to come with an awfully large...

May I ask how long it was before the Evil Dog started fermenting? Mines at 21 degrees and nothing so far after 21hrs?

First fridge fermenter- need a heat source?

Yes noted : ) I have stuck the temp probe straight thru the top of the fridge and into the centre of the fermentation bin. That way there's no wires and I get a truer temp reading of the actual wort however it causes another issue the temp probe is not heavy enough to fall straight down so I am...
