Is my electric boiler safely grounded?

I used to be involved in the manufacture of electrical equipment. If basic single insulation (ie the red or blue insulation visible when 3 core cable has the sheath cut back) is all that protects metal parts that could be touched from becoming live in the event of a fault then the metal must be...

Why are my lager kits so dark?

Interesting thread. I've often thought the lager kits I've made turn out darker than expected. coopers canadian blonde was really dark. I made the wilco cerveza a couple of months ago. It has turned out the lightest coloured of anything I have made to date. Just a shame it tastes so awful. Has...

    First brew - no fizz!

My first brew was pretty flat too. I used Coopers carbonation drops to prime with. I've never used them since and I've not had a flat beer either. I guess they must work or they wouldn't sell them but I found them useless. Ordinary granulated sugar does the job.

    Coopers priming drops

I got some of those priming drops with my first kit. I found them to be pretty useless. The ones unused from the first brew are still in the packet. I now use ordinary granulated sugar for priming the bottles. I buy Tesco 17p still water 2L bottles and use the water for brewing and the bottles...

Any mechanics or auto electricians presnt

Yes and No :) You can spear the insulation with sharpened probes and continuity test with a meter set to resistance and it might show you if one is broken. The broken wire may have voltage across the break and both ends may connect through the rest of the car to still show continuity and not...

Any light masters on the forum

I used to have a business manufacturing lighting but we stopped trading just as LEDs were starting to emerge as a new light source. Consequently I don't know a lot about them but I do about halogens. Lamp failure can be partly down to the design of the fixture not keeping it at the correct...

ok to use 2 litre water bottles unsterilised ?

I use Tesco value still water to brew with. The empty bottles go into a cardboard box for 2 weeks then come out and get filled with beer. No sterilising of bottles. The still water is in the same bottles as the sparkling and takes the pressure fine....including some that are over carbonated due...

    Fermentation Fridge Build

The white block with VS on it is a vossloh shwabe lighting choke for running a fluorescent light. No idea if it has some other application in a fridge as most fridge lights are just a small standard light bulb. If it is for the light then a wire will run to the door switch and may not be what...

    Camera lens advice

Have you tried microsofts free stitching program? http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/um/ ... s/ivm/ice/ Its very easy to use and has done a good job whenever I've used it. You do need to try and keep the camera in the same spot for all shots and just rotate it but I've not used the tripod...

    Windows 7 or 8?

I got a new ultrabook with touchscreen and windows 8 and its great :) I also got a book on windows 8 as it is the first time I'd used it. Once i got my head round the idea that it is 2 operating systems in one (metro tile apps from the store and windows 7 type desktop) all became clear. I can...

Leave wort for x days? Really?

I've come back to home brewing after a break of many years. I'm only brewing kit beers and was back then. None of my recent brews have had any 'off twang' but I can remember there being a taste in some brews way back when. I used to brew with tap water and granulated sugar and sterilise (i...

Fizzy bottled beer (or cider) with no sediment - how?

Thanks. Something I'd not heard of before and will look into more. Funny how thinking about bottling might lead to buying a keg :)

Fizzy bottled beer (or cider) with no sediment - how?

I've read CO2 threads and most seem to be about pressurising kegs etc. I can't find much about bottles. I saw a youtube video where a guy had a bottle cap that connected to a pipe, regulator and co2 cylinder and added gas to the bottle, he shook it and it was job done. Remove injector cap and...

    Brew Enhancer 2

That was my experience with the carbonation drops too. I used 2l bottles and multiplied up how many drops to use. Beer is pretty near flat after 3 weeks in the bottles. A week ago I opened 2/3rds of the bottles and put in priming sugar quick and put the lid on immediately as the sugar released...

    sneaky taster Wherry lovely indeed

I've had a Wherry in the fermenting fridge for a couple of days now since bottling my first homebrew in around 25 years (coopers cerveza). Got to say every time I open the fridge for a peek at what's going on in the bucket it really does smell good! if It tastes as good as it smells I think I'm...

Yet another fermenting fridge build + pics

Should be an easy enough mod should the need arise to add cooling. At the moment I can't see the fridge being used for fermenting during the summer.

Yet another fermenting fridge build + pics

As the heater is strapped against the ali plate the whole plate warms up so I'm hoping it will warm the bottom of the bucket as much as it warms the air in the fridge. It feels warm to touch when on for a while but certainly not hot so I can't see it doing any harm.

Yet another fermenting fridge build + pics

After waiting 3 weeks for a temperature controller to arrive from China I eventually gave up and paid more to get one from a UK ebay seller and finally got to warm my garage/workshop fridge up. So here's the fridge And here is a 6mm thick aluminium plate with 2 wooden legs screwed to it...

    rust in my new boiler

There's a useful site for spotting spammers - http://www.stopforumspam.com/ If you put this guys user name it he's a hit :) Moderators will know his IP address and you can search on that too if the name is not there. (I mod on an unrelated forum btw)

I've been lurking and reading mostly and have to say I'm impressed just how much the regulars here do respond to what must be quite repetitive questions. The sort of thread that prompted this light hearted one happen on a photography forum I mod on too. Why does no one comment on my pictures...
