    plastic bottles v glass

I think the advantages of good quality PET bottles with double layers, etc. overcome the disadvantages. They don't take oxygen, they are very light, they don't break if they fall, you don't run risks of overcarbing (so you can actually carb that 3.5 vol Belgian without worrying), they can be...

Help with first brew recipe (IPA)

Looks good to me! I'd consider mashing 100g of pale malt to convert 100g of amber malt or steeping a bit of crystal for colour. Or medium DME. What about adding 20g of EKG to the dry hop? Might be hoppier than what you want.

    Hops visualizer

Goes to show how much of the flavour and aroma comes from the other aromatic compounds! Interesting to see the general profile of different hops, specially some that are outliers in their AA range (like UK/GER Brewers' Gold). Looks like traditionally European hop breeders have minimised Myrcene...

    Re: Wilko's Delicate Pilsner

Let me know how it goes as I'd like to turn it into a tasty foolproof go-to recipe. Nothing like independent replication.

    Re: Wilko's Delicate Pilsner

Not a lot of detail but some. I've made saisons before and slightly warmed them, but this one I left it in a converted loft so it must have gone fairly warm. Definitively more character. First couple days were cloudy but when the sun got out temps must have been around 25/26. That yeast deals...

    Re: Wilko's Delicate Pilsner

This kit made a cracking Saison. I added leftovers of Saaz and Hallertau when mixing the kit and pitched Belle Saison. Also added a kilo of brew enhancer (wanted something with sugar to bring phenols into it). The fermentation was allowed to go wild into the mid twenties. Beer came out light...

    Extra pale spring blend

I just noticed on Munton's website that they sell something called "Ex(tra) pale / spring blend" malt, that is considerably paler than anything else they carry. Has anybody had a chance to use it and what is it?

    Invert Sugar

I guess in a lower abv beer there are two reasons to use it: a) it gives the beer a drier edge than using malt, b) it can be an interesting flavour addition if it's amber or dark (honey, caramel, dark fruit tones from the caramelised sugar). If you look at the historic early dark milds they were...

Sounds very similar to the Mangrove Jack's West Coast!

    Growing Hops??

My Fuggles is two feet by now, my Brewer's Gold a couple inches above the ground.

Dry hopping with pellets into king keg?

Easy enough to give a boil to a muslin bag and chuck the hops in it. You always have to let your keg settle for a day before pouring if you don't use a bag (that said, I find that pellets settle better than whole hops).

    World Hop Production stats

I'd be surprised if San Miguel, Carlsberg or Budweiser used small independent growers...

    Galaxy Pale Ale

Just carry on dry hopping! (Once in fermentor, once in cask, etc.!)

    World Hop Production stats

I guess a lot of commercial lagers do with pretty much any hop for bittering and off you go. Obviously, the massive markets they have make for fairly boring hops to be mass farmed too. (Anybody has tried a microbrewery ale with Herkules in it?)

    Galaxy Pale Ale

Definitively steep and dry hop to get the aroma out!

recipe for a thank you brew for the mrs...!

Mild / porter often goes well. You can quite well add fruit or honey in the case of porter but be careful as they ferment more than malt and can end up dry.

    Bittering and Dry Hopping Only

I say thumbs up to bittering and dry hopping. One of my local breweries only does bittering, steeping and dry hopping (no late additions) and their beers are well tasty.

    AG#5 - Something malty...

Usually Notty finishes dry for me, though, you might want to try S04, Mangrove Jack's M07 or Munton's.

If you prefer drier stick to Nottingham or equivalent, S04, MJ's English ale yeast, or something similar.
