Very low pre boil gravity. Can I save this brew?

Ah, good to know for next time. I had thought there would be a risk of over pitching as the instructions on the packet said it was good for 20 to 30 litres. As my batch was only 9l I thought half should do the job. Would it be a good idea to make a starter with the remaining yeast for the...

Very low pre boil gravity. Can I save this brew?

Hi guys, I had cooled the sample to 25 then put the result through the calculator. So it should have been accurate. Just using dried yeast, going to put half a packet of s-04 in, saving the rest for a future brew. I think it should keep if in the fridge for a few weeks.

Very low pre boil gravity. Can I save this brew?

Thanks again Rivvo. You originally mentioned about giving it a good stir, but unfortunately I was already in the boil so unable to do so. Had I done that I don't think I would have been so worried! I have just done a post boil ready at obtained 1.037. So although a bit low than the desired...

Very low pre boil gravity. Can I save this brew?

Thanks for the quick response Rivvo. I'll do just that, it's all a learning curve! I have been reading a lot during the 90 mins of the boil and have identified a couple of things which could contribute to the low OG. :thumb: One being the grain. Bought from my LHBS, pre crushed in 1kg bags with...

Very low pre boil gravity. Can I save this brew?

I am currently in the boil process for my first Mini BIAB. However it isn't going to plan. My Gravity into boil was predicted to be 1.027/8 but I have achieved 1.013. It was a 90 minute mash at 66c. I dropped to 65 by the end of the mash. Put the kettle onto boil and as it was coming to a...

strong smell from fv, okay to use?

Hi guys? I was recently given an old youngs beer and wine Fv - the type with a screw cap. It was quite dirty so I have given it a decent clean with some oxy (couple scoops left in for a few hours). It now looks fine but still has a stale beer smell. Is it okay to use? It maybe that they all...

I would go for the whoodfordes wherry too. It was my first brew, couldn't be simpler and tastes great.

    50w fish tank heater

Bought a cheapie 25W aquarium heater off ebay last week. FV in a storage box filled with water, heater in it set at 20c and it seems to be a nice constant 20c. I don't have a thermometer in the FV but I am assuming it is going to be about the same as the water in the bath. I also have a very old...

    Brew 3 Coopers Stout

I got a Coopers Stour in the FV today. I added the kit can, 1kg of BKE and 1 tin of treacle. Brewed short to 20l. The SG read 1052, the trial jar tasted quite sweet and strongly of treacle. I have read on the forum this kit is pretty good so I am very much looking forward to tasting! It is...

Thanks for the recommendation. I am quite excited with the prospect of tinkering and being able to compare with the standard brew.

Improving a £2:74 kit. Your thoughts please.

Not exactly exciting but as I am only getting my toes wet with homebrew, I have ordered 3 kits and intend to do the following... 1 - Brew exactly as the instructions recommend. 2 - Brew short to 17L, as Kinleycat suggested, to compare how this affects one can kits. 3 - Undecided, but certainly...

Need guidance on using a keg. When to use CO2, etc...

Sorry yes, I meant 40 pint barrel from Wilkinsons! Any idea how you know when to add the CO2 to prevent the air going back up into the keg? I only want to use it if I can keep beer in there for some time taking the odd pint now and then. I am still planning on bottling some brews, but there is...

Need guidance on using a keg. When to use CO2, etc...

So I have 36 bottles conditioning, but another 40 pints nearly ready for bottling/ kegging. As I am planning on getting quite a few kits on the go I would really like to use a keg but am very unsure how to use one correctly (even after a number of searches on the forum). I am still planning on...

    Bottling buckets

The is what I did. I have only bottled on brew so far, but I just didn't want the hassle of doing straight from the FV. Plus I think batch priming just makes things easier and ensures each bottle gets the same amount of sugar.

Brew #2 Wilko's Best Bitter Kit with mistake

The room temp today was a pretty constant 15c. This evening with the wood burner on the thermometer next to the FV is showing 18c. It will drop down a lot this evening though. not sure the minimum it gets, I have a electric thermometer I need to get batteries too which should record the min and...
