    Infection?

teadixon, you don't say what your FG is; are you priming and bottling too early?

I'll show you mine if you show me yours....

I purchased a large mesh bag to contain the hops when boiling. You can then lift it out after the boil and let them drain. I was advised not to squeeze the hops, just sparge them, otherwise you may get a metallic taste like tinned beer did all those years ago.

    Some all grain questions

I asked a micro brewery owner about a metallic taste I was getting (remember the early days of canned beer!). He told me to drain the hops but never squeeze them. I've not had that taste since.

    Really bitter taste

Thanks for the replies chaps. I heat the water in a Burco boiler; up to 60°C, (which is around the temp' for de aeration then 66°C once I add the grain. I pour the wort into a fermenter, sparge the grain then clean the boiler. The wort goes back into the boiler with the hops etc. I rinse...

    Really bitter taste

Good evening all. I have returned to doing an FM for the last half dozen brews, attempting to make a Directors style bitter (David Line 1985 recipe) The first three were nice, but the last three have had a rather medicinal / bitter taste. I have replaced my fermenters and check everything is...

    Chestnut Ale.

During a holiday in Corsica, I tried 'Pietra', one of their local beers. Both my wife and I had really weird dreams. It took a couple of nights to pinpoint what we thought was the cause,; I put it down to chestnut flour which is a main ingredient.

    Hop oil

Wow! thanks everyone. I'll give the fruit & beer a miss thanks, it does nothing for me. My question was to find out if the oil was used ans an addition or a substitute, which has been answered. Looks like I'll stick to the real thing. Cheers all!

    Wanted - Rubber Bungs

Hi, must you use rubber bungs? I have used them (many years ago) but I could smell the rubber in the wine I produced, even though they were supposed to be food grade. I've never used them since.

Message Board Brewing Competition announcement thread.

Hi, I'm interested, but I fear the logistics will be a problem, unless there are enough people local to each other who would do this. If travelling is involved, people will have to make a note of the yeast used, as some don't settle (and stick) as well as others. I used to be in a wine / beer...

    Return to Full Mash.....

G'day folks, I've not been on here for some time; I've read some good threads. I've been brewing using extract over the years, but recently decided to do a full mash. I though the extract was good, but I have to admit I'm doing AG in future. What a difference! None of the (what I would call)...

WANTED: 50L or 60L pot for boil

Hi Jeff, I only have a 30L Burco boiler if you're interested. I've not used it for a while, but just tested it and it's clean and in working order. I know it's short notice, but I'll be passing Swindon on 4th July

Canned Homebrew Kits vs Grain Homebrewing

Hi Phil, I've just retuned to this site after quite a while and just spotted your thread. I have done a full mash in the past and the results I had were almost the same as using malt extract with a little less messing about. I like to play about with the water, adding gypsum and Epsom salts...

    stainless steel or aluminium

Don't leave anything acidic in the aluminium pot, as it will leech some of the metals, you will detect that metallic taste like the 'Long Life' beer of many years ago. If you do use soap, make sure you rinse it very well, then once more.
