    Bacon!

I don't know if the bacon has changed in the UK but over the years it certainly has here. The rind has disappeared, and the bacon looks like it has been joined to another piece of bacon, a bit like looking at a length of wood that has been laminated and the grain not matching. What happens to...

    Make mine a Mockeson

Coming back from New York a couple of years ago and having had a couple of Left Hand Brewing Milk Stout's which I enjoyed as they were nitro pours from the bottle and delicious, I purchased some lactose to make a milk stout. Present-day, Gordon Strong has a recipe that he bases on a Mackeson the...

    Cauliflower!

Had a good run with caulies over winter and spring, pulled out the last today making way for summer crops. They aren't as attractive as they have been, starting to bolt. Knocked up some pakora batter and dinner is served with some Blue Grenadier and Paw Paw and Chili sauce.

    How cool is this?

Cooling for a King Keg as the King Keg with a bag to store your cask ale. Effectively, the Key-Keg is a cask which shrinks as the beer flows. (CAMRA quote) So we can't use a cooling coil because of the bag. So Keg King has come up with a cooling jacket more efficient than a coil and also with...

    Cask beer from a keg.

I have been playing around with the new King Kegs, while it is a commercial throw-away keg it has an excellent use for home brewers who don't want to go to the expense of purchasing a beer engine, best of all for the home brewer there is no need to ditch the keg. How it works, if needed the keg...

    Bag in a Keg.

I wrote some time ago about using a 10 litre keg with a bag inside. Decided to go with the 19 litre bag in a keg. So while cask beers do taste superior the shelf life isn't so good. Yes one can fill the vacuum of a cask with gas from the bottle and prevent air getting in but it's a lot of...

10 litre Mini keg / Cask

Got a 10 litre mini keg today, sorted out my old D coupler which looks like I am going to get a different one, plus the old picnic pump. Bought an Ultra tap stout spout. So just waiting on the bags and whatever coupler I will need for turning the keg into a cask. Dispensing real cask, lightly...

    Can filling machine.

Something you may find interesting from Keg Land Hey guys. We are looking to manufacture a can filling machine that will fill can's automatically. So you would just load the can into the machine and press a button and it will fill to the desired level. We are wondering if we connect this...

    Hard Rubbish Day!

Two banes of my life when it comes to relationship between my wife and I is hard rubbish day and Christmas day. Hard rubbish, I don't know if it happens in the UK but it is the day when you can put out all the hard rubbish accumulated. My wife has the idea that if you don't have any hard rubbish...

    NHS

Get Andy Burnham in charge, he will carry on getting the NHS privatised, though he will probably pocket the Golden Share.

    IBU's

Those who subscribe to BYO may have read this article, A Modern Method for Calculating IBU's, I haven't fully checked out his calculator but I have always suspected that Tinseth may be flawed. As I say I haven't compared the two together but the article is in the section Blog Mirror (on world...

    Grain conditioning for milling.

I have read lots of articles about conditioning the grain prior to milling. Gordon Strong in his earlier days went to a boot camp at Sierra Nevada and relates his experience of conditioning the grain using the strike water to spray on the grain prior to milling. In fact many folk recommend using...

    'Apollo' Stainless Steel

Unboxed my S/Steel Apollo, a neat unit ticks all the boxes for what one will need in a fermenter, same lid as my PET Apollo's even got the 'Spundy' thrown in. If you need a spunding valve these come in at under a fiver in UK currency. The legs on the unit are adjustable so it can fit nicely into...

    Old brewery photos.

Turning the malt at Castle Brewery Cockermouth. Same brewery getting the days deliveries ready. Looks like horse drawn drays and floaters, steam powered drays at the rear. Pre first world war steam powered dray Staff at Theakston's brewery, I think those things looking a lot like a watering...

Bass brewery when proper beer was made.

Some snaps of Bass brewery of a bygone era. Knock off time boys and men walking out not one uncovered head. Two pics of the coopers shop A view of Bass brewery showing the water tower. A bottle delivery, notice Bass had already taken over Worthington. 10,000 Hogs Heads. And finally the...

    Floating dip tube for fermenters.

Anyone with the bog standard red and white taps on their fermenter and they have trouble taking a hydrometer sample because of the lees. A simple solution is to buy one of these inserts which fit into the tap, drill the bottom out of the insert and slide in a short length of tube with the float...

What did you learn about brewing 2020?

What did you learn about brewing during the past year. It doesn't matter how long one has been home brewing for, or what other hobby for that matter, there are always lessons to be learned. Could be from your own observations, something you have read, I would be interested to know what you have...

    Ready made.

Went in my local home brew shop today, now every home brew shop sells FWK's. Can't understand why it hasn't caught on over in the UK. 17 litre cubes, pour into fermenter add water and yeast and ferment. Or the bag in a box FWK's.
