Our Council uses the plant below all non recyclable waste goes here non goes into landfill - (this is not the case for many Councils.)

The Barrow plant produces a solid recovered fuel (SRF) which can be used as a feedstock in energy-from-waste incinerators. Following its arrival at the facility, the waste is shredded to pieces sized between 20 and 30 centimetres and placed in an aerobic fermentation area where it is placed in contiguous windrows. Air is drawn through from a raised floor to help aid the biological breakdown of the waste. After 12 to 15 days in the area, the waste is transported to a recycling and recovery area where recyclables such as glass, metals and stones are extracted.

The running and management of the site will create up to 15 local jobs, in addition to the 50 which were created during the construction phase of the new facility.

The facility can process up to 75,000 tonnes of waste per annum

Some waste, such as bulky non-recyclable items collected at household waste and recycling centres (HWRCs), will still go directly to landfill, however the council said the amount of waste sent directly to landfill will reduce from 150,000 tonnes to 30,000 tonnes as a result of the new facilities. All our recycling goes to another Barrow based company called Sinkfall -

The company has gone from strength to strength and now, over 15 years later, operates from the same site at Sinkfall Farm on the outskirts of Barrow-in-Furness. From our site we are able to tip, sort and recycle all kinds of waste on a daily basis and from this we divert up to 97% of waste away from landfill. With 5 skip wagons and dedicated staff we are able to provide the services which we are renowned for in the local area.

SUPPLIES

As well as bringing in the waste we also supply a 100% recycled PAS100 compost, good quality Top Soil, Walling stone, Granite Kerbs, Granite Setts and Road Plainings. The compost is processed on site from the Green Waste brought in from Barrow Borough Council and South Lakeland District Councils kerbside collections.

As a fully licenced Waste Transfer Station we are able to offer local companies and business, however large or small, an excellent environmentally friendly disposal route for all types of waste. With a hardworking dedicated team all waste is sorted on site and sent down varying recycling routes, ensuring that we are able to divert 97% of waste away from landfill.

We are licenced to take all kinds of waste such as Green garden waste, Wood, Soil & Stone, Plasterboard, Glass, WEEE waste, Farm Plastic, UPVC frames, Scrap Metal and all other non hazardous materials.

It looks like an impressive operation. Plastics have a high calorific value, so incinerating the non-recyclable element of the waste under controlled conditions is an acceptable compromise when there is no other viable and economic option. It is a whole lot better than putting it in the ground.
The official position of the UK Plastics industry is to encourage recycling and re-use wherever possible because it is much more sustainable than incineration. This is relatively straightforward for industrial plastic waste, but remains a major challenge for the domestic waste stream. Local authorities do what they can with their limited resources . . . . . and clearly some are making a better job of it than others.
