Hi, I brewed my first 5 litres AG Belgien ipa on Sunday. Its been bubbling away since then but today its stopped. Does that mean it's stopped fermenting or has it just calmed down a bit? How long does it usually last. The temp is 21 degrees. Cheers.

After 3 days it may well slow down enough that you think it has stopped, I have two brews that bubbled quite strongly for over 7 days, whereas another stopped after 3 days, yeast type and wort can make a big difference. However the chances are it is still working away quietly and I always give mine 14 days to let the yeast finish fermenting and clear up after itself. The only way to really know if it has finished is to check the gravity and if it is the same three days later then it has finished, but that uses a lot of beer up proportionally ( I don't risk pouring it back in) which is why I usually wait until day 10 before checking gravity.

Hi thanks for the quick reply. Good to know its still fermenting. I don't really want to check the gravity. Like you said it uses up a lot of beer and I haven't got much to start with. Plus it's in a demijon so it will be a pain to get out. Cheers.

Hopefully you are using hop pellets rather than leaf. You will struggle pushing whole leaf hops into a dj. I would just drop the pellets loose into the dj. They will float on the surface for a few days but will drop to the bottom if you cold crash or move the dj before bottling.

Thanks for the info. Yes they're dry pellets. I'm planning on leaving the beer in the demijon for 2 weeks just to make sure fermentation is over. So should I add the dry hops 2 days before the end or sooner? Cheers.

I try to dry hop for 4 or 5 days but sometimes it's longer depending on when I get time to bottle. I usually prefer hoppy US style IPAs so I want a big-ish hop hit.

I'm not sure which hops you are using: citrus type hops, I would say 4-5 days; traditional Belgian style hops, probably less, say 2-4 days, perhaps?

H, i yes a prefer hoppy beer aswell. It's 15g of simcoe. I'll put it in for the last 5 days see what happens. Cheers.
