Anyone enter beers into this competition?

First round judging I believe got underway last night, and is to continue every night this week. There are just over 400 entries involved and the top prizes are pretty insane.

Champion brewer wins a trip to Manchester to brew with Cloudwater. Best in show prize is TBC but they've said the winner "will be treated to a three day trip to a very special location, and a once in a lifetime brewday."

I don't expect to come anywhere close to winning but it's nice to dream!

Yeah I put in a lambic, hefeweizen, mild and a triple. Not expecting much, but hopefully some feedback. I'm looking forward to the event though, and the brewclub night afterwards.

Nice diverse range of styles there @IainM . I put in three beers in the end, one of which was a Spice/Herb beer which turned out a bit mad. Safe to say it will divide the judges (at best).

I knew I wasn't going to be able to attend this year when I put in my entries for the competition. I wasn't that bothered at the time but as the event draws nearer I find myself a bit gutted TBH. I'm sure it'll be great fun and much better that the club night is on after the conference on the Saturday. Best of luck.

Sure, I didn't go last year, but from what I hear having the club night before resulted in quite a few people missing the main event.

@IainM Yeah we missed club night last year unfortunately but as we travelled down on the Saturday we were compelled to go out for an evening in London to visit some quality beer bars etc and suffice to say we were all a bit worse for wear on the Sunday. Still enjoyed the event but not as much as I might have.

Well they've announced a good few of the brewers progressing to the 'finals' on Facebook. One category of mine has been called so far and no joy for me. I don't hold out much hope for my other two beers progressing as it sounds as though the standards are very very high this year.

Fingers crossed though.

@JonBrew, snap. I thought the wheat beer would get through, but alas no. I've only got the lambic left to announce, but I don't think it will make it as it is a mere 6 months old. If I remember rightly, all the UK browns that made the final 5 were 38+.

Yup 38+ indeed. That was my first category. I had a Scottish 70/- entered which, funnily enough, scored me 37 in the Welsh National and didn't place. Just shows you how strong the UK home brewing scene is getting.

@IainM How was BrewCon? You still recovering? :)
It was great fun. Exhibitors were good, I managed to have a good chat with Rob from the Malt Miller. Plenty of brewing porn on display, best of which was the shiny shiny SS brewtech unitank. The guy who runs our club had a stand flogging stuff, where I was serving a keg of dark mild I'd brewed for the event. That was a good conversation starter, although I missed most of the talks because of it, but the ones I did see were good. The tasting sessions where they brought out the best beers entered into to comp were also good. There were a few brewing legends and BJCP judges buzzing around too, who were always up for a chat. The best bit, though, was the club night afterwards. About 12 clubs, each serving around 10 beers each. It was good just chatting with the brewers about what they've been making. Some really interesting things, from raw spontaneous sours to wood aged imperial stouts, with plenty of hop monsters, and a few odd-ball ones, like heart of palm or cricket beer (yup, the insect). I also enjoyed giving my beer to judges and talking about it, how it could gain a few points here and there. Head wasn't great on Sunday, and I didn't have much fun lugging back the CO2 cannister and empty keg on the train, but well worth it. I'll be back next year for sure.

@IainM - That sounds fantastic! That's cool that you were serving beer at the actual event. I've seen some photos of the talks/presentations on their twitter feed. I also gather Sarah Pantry filmed a lot of the talks and is putting them on her YouTube channel so will need try and get a look at those.

Club night sounds great too. I'll definitely need to try and get back down for it next year.

I was chasing my feedback, only to be told that none of my beers were received!

Oh that's a shocker mate! Do you know what happened, i.e. was it the courier's error etc?

I'm very keen to see feedback. My scores were kind of meh so hoping to find out where they judges think the beers fell down. On that note, don't know about you, but I'm really not a fan of the new BJCP score sheets. I believe they were introduced to help judges complete them quicker and therefore judge more beers but there's a lot less space for judges to leave comments etc. Wait and see though I suppose.

I know right, I'm gutted. I don't know why it never arrived. I served the mild to a few people there, including Sarah Pantry and Lee Immins, and they really liked it. Plus, the hefeweizen won a couple of local competitions, and there were only 11 in that category, so I was surprised that neither of them got to the final 5 in their categories. At least now I know why!

@IainM - That's a bummer. Sounds like both those beers could have done well. I suppose there's always the UK national in February.
True, although the hefe will be pasts it's prime and the mild has all been drunk. Guess I'll just have to brew more!
