Are they a waste of time?. My Irish mate got one for Christmas and asked me to make it with him.
For starters it only make a a small American DJ full and the trub filled most of it.
One packet of hops was missing, there was no way of separating the grain from the wort, and the
instructions could only be found online. The thermometer was a mercury type.....better than nothing I guess.
Well, that was my experience...what was yours? Im interested to know

I am surprised that there is a mercury type thermometer in the kit.
I think you will find it is a food grade liquid in glass instead, instead of breakage.
I still use my Boots liquid in glass thermometer which has survived many years of use, and I haven't got a problem with using it.

hang on. ill shove it under my tongue, to see if its ok to use
Actually I don't have a problem with the mercury type
its the rest of the kit which is next to useless.. unless u know what you are doing
The trub was 2 inches deep in a glass jar.
we got 6 small bottles of beer out of it....missing hops??
raid the freezer for something appropriate to Punk IPA!!
At the end of the day its not mine so hope he enjoys it,
even tho I made the stuff.
