I started an elderflower wine on Sunday and got everything in the pot enjoyed hearing the bubbles and then got distracted with every intention of returning to take an OG. However, life happened and 3 days later I’ve transferred it to a DJ. Is there a way of guesstimating an OG from the recipe?

Not exactly a direct answer but If you aim for total sugar content in a DJ of 1100g you will be around 13% ABV.

When it's done see how many pints it takes to get you...
Merry,
Tiddly,
Squiffy,
"I've had a couple..."
"A bit ******.."
Hammered,
"YOU'RE IN A RIGHT STATE!"
...and go from there.

Haha! Would you take this reading on an empty stomach or add a kebab first?

Cheers chippy_tea, now to work our how much sugar was in the raisins...

If you get the last reaction off the other half you know you may have either...
Exceeded your expected fg points...in which case you are correct and entitled to celebrate your continued success as a home brewer
Or...you've had too many...but given the FACT it's dead cheap you have actually SAVED money.

If there’s 450g in the recipe does that make 265.5g of sugar? Plus 1kg of added sugar 1265.5g. I’m guessing a touch over 13%?

I’ll be sure to pass your advice onto my wife mate...

I think it’s 59% of a raisin is sugar.

So jah 265.5g sugar in 450g raisins.

My hydrometer table says 1265g is more like 14%.

I find another good one is ‘can I feel my fingertips?’

Usually when they go a bit numb I’m a fair way there lol.

Or my dads excellent answer to ‘how do you know it’s alcoholic?’

‘Sticks to the glass doesn’t it?’

He never measures the gravity or anything lol
