sounds like a maraca like its filled with little grains if thats any use? i will take it apart and see if there is any water

Yeah, that's standard. If you could pop the end off, then tip out a few and get it to read 1.000 in water with the end on, and then glue the end on you'd be back in business.

Buy yourself a glass one and trial tube; should be less than a tenner for both. It'll say on the scale what temperature it's calibrated at- usually 20C. Boil some tapwater (to get rid of dissolved gas) and when it cools, fill the trial jar. check that the water is at the calibration temperature and measure the SG, which should be 1000. If it's a bit out, you can add or subtract the difference from future readings, but it'll probably be accurate. Throw the other one away- it's dangerous, you're going to need to know your FG before bottling.
I can't understand why anyone would even consider trying to mend a faulty one given how much a new one costs, and how important they are to what we all do.
