The original report is here : https://assets.publishing.service.g...nated_patients_during_the_second_wave__2_.pdf

Still doesn't mean we're out of the woods - what's going on in India and Brazil is horrendous, and a great breeding ground for new variants.

Yeah this is my worry, It does hopefully look for what we have had so far the vaccine is making a big difference here but what is going around the world is horrific and could lead to breaking the current vaccine..

This is good news, if true. The AZ vaccine protects against the Indian double mutant.

Let's hope the enforced hotel stay will stop it spreading here.

Too late - the time to be keeping it out was a month or two ago, travel bans are one of those things that by the time you are reacting to something, you are too late. You have to be proactive.

Compare and contrast January 2020 :

As of yesterday that article has gained a disclaimer suggesting it might be out of date, which I'm sure has nothing to do with this article from the same author today :

It seems to be only the Government and their scientific advisors who are surprised by this.

More than 600 pieces of medical equipment are being sent to India as the country faces a record surge of coronavirus cases, the UK government has said.

The assistance package includes 495 oxygen concentrators - which extract oxygen from the air to give to patients - as well as ventilators.

India is seeing thousands of deaths a day amid oxygen shortages.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: "We stand side by side with India."

The first shipment of equipment will leave the UK on Sunday and is due to arrive in the Indian capital, New Delhi, in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
In total, the UK will send nine airline containers of supplies this week, including 495 oxygen concentrators, 120 non-invasive ventilators and 20 manual ventilators.

Local media reports say oxygen concentrators are in high demand in India, as they can meet some patients' need for extra oxygen without adding to the strain on hospital oxygen supplies.

For the fourth day in a row, India has reported a record number of new infections, with almost 350,000 cases in the last 24-hour period and 2,767 deaths.

Many hospitals in Delhi are refusing to accept new patients because they cannot guarantee oxygen supplies. Oxygen tanks are being transported across the country, sometimes with a police escort, and flown in from nearby countries to meet demand.

Mr Johnson said India is a "friend and partner" facing "a deeply concerning time in the fight against Covid-19".

"I'm determined to make sure that the UK does everything it can to support the international community in the global fight against the pandemic," he said.

Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said the UK was in discussions with the Indian government to provide further support in addition to this first delivery.

The EU has also pledged to pool resources to send supplies of oxygen and medicine to India.

Labour has called on the government to offer UK expertise in genome sequencing to help track the impact of coronavirus variants in India, as well as offering oxygen supplies, surplus medicines and surplus vaccine doses.

Shadow foreign secretary Lisa Nandy said: "Defeating this virus anywhere means defeating it everywhere. We have seen how quickly Covid-19 variants that have been identified in one country are able to spread rapidly across the globe."

I keep saying that nobody is safe until everybody is safe, this is just one example why :
https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/21/health/vaccine-nursing-homes-infections.htmlhttps://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/70/wr/mm7017e2.htm
Although 90% of the 83 residents at a Kentucky carehome were vaccinated, only 53% of the 116 staff were. When an unvaccinated member of staff got COVID, 26 residents were infected -18 who had been vaccinated, 6 non-vaccinated, 2 part-vaccinated - and 20 staff were infected, including four who had been vaccinated.

1 vaccinated resident and 2 non-vaccinated residents died.

So the non-vax were 3-4x more likely to get COVID, and the vaccines were 87% effective against COVID symptoms and 95% effective against hospitalisation - but that still didn't stop a vaccinated resident dying. One of the non-vax residents had caught it 10 months previously but appears to have been reinfected and died.

It only takes one person to be infected to infect 46 people, and some of them will die even if they've had a vaccine.

Whilst our politicians would rather see "bodies pile high in their thousands", a zero-Covid policy has led to >50,000 people attending a gig in Auckland and the MCG hosting 78,000 for an Aussie rules match - all without masks or distancing. You save the economy by proactively hitting the virus hard, not by "saving Christmas" with half-baked measures.

There is little the government can do to stop idiots being idiots, i watched the football at Wembley yesterday many of the people wearing masks had them pulled under their noses.

As for the "bodies pile high" comment they are discussing it on 5Live it was a comment said in private that a back stabber has leaked i don't think for a moment any politician wants to see bodies piled high anywhere it was a figure of speech maybe not a well thought out one but it was not supposed to have been leaked.
