    I have just noticed we no longer have the abbreviation link and as they can be a bit confusing when you are a new member i think a sticky thread would be a big help.
    I will get it started then if members can add theirs to the thread i will copy them into the OP to save members searching.

    Edit to add - we are trying to stick to regularly used abbreviations so as not to end up with hundreds in one thread.


    AAU...alpha acid units...bitterness scale for hops. - (clint)

    ABV - alcohol by volume (Ajhutch)

    ABW alcohol by weight (Kelper)

    AG - all grain (Kelper)

    BIAB - Brew in a bag (Hoppyland)

    CFC - counter flow chiller (Clint)

    Corny...short for Cornelius keg (Clint)

    CT - Campden tablets (Chippy_Tea)

    DDH - Double Dry Hopped (SteveElder)

    DIPA.....Double IPA (Hop a long)


    DJ - Demijohn - (Chippy_Tea)

    DIPA.....Double IPA

    DME - dry malt extract - (Ajhutch)

    DMS Dimethyl sulphide - a cabbage-like off flavour (Kelper)

    DWE - dried wheat extract - aids head retention and used in wheat beer recipes. (Dad_of_John)

    EKG - East Kent Goldings (hops) (Llamaman)

    FG - final gravity - (Clint)

    FV - Fermenting Vessel. - (Chippy_Tea)

    FWH - first wort hops (cushyno)

    GF - Grainfather - (Drunkula)

    GH - Greg Hughes - The Bible - Home brew Beer by GH (Clint)

    GP - Gravity points (Portreath)

    Grain bill - or more common a malt bill is all of the grains and adjuncts used is a recipe to brew a beer (this does not include hop additions).

    GS - golden syrup - partially inverted sugar. poor mans candi sugar. (Dad_of_John)

    GW - Graham Wheeler RIP (jjsh)

    HBF - Home Brew Forum (Portreath)

    H&B - Holland and Barrett - a health food store that sells LME plus a few other homebrew ingredients. Look out for MyQul buying his fair trade organic quinoa granola. (Llamaman)

    HBS - home brew shop (cushyno)

    HERMS - Heat Exchange Recirulating Mash system (Hoppyland)

    HLT - hot liquor tank - (Drunkula)

    IBU - International bittering unit (Ajhutch)

    IPA - Indian pale ale. (DadofJohn)

    Lauter - to lift the grain from the wort (Kelper)

    LHBS - local home brew shop (cushyno)

    LME - liquid malt extract (Ajhutch)

    Malt - grain that has been soaked, germinated and dried (Kelper)

    Malt bill - all of the grains and adjuncts used is a recipe to brew a beer (this does not include hop additions).

    MYO - "Make Your Own" beer, wine an cider kits. (Benjamin Tolmer)

    Malt pipe - the inner container for grain in an all-in-one brewer (Kelper)

    Mash - to soak malted grain in hot water, releasing fermentable sugars (Kelper)

    MK - minikeg - (Drunkula)

    MO - Maris Otter, a two row barley the malted version of which is popular with home-brewers. (Horners)

    NEIPA - New England IPA (SteveElder)

    PB - pressure barrel (Ajhutch)

    RIMS - Recirculating Infusion Mash system (Hoppyland)

    RO reverse osmosis (water purification) (Kelper)

    SG specific gravity (Kelper)

    SMaSh - Single Malt and Single Hop (Hop a Long)

    Sparge - to rinse the grain with hot water after lautering (Kelper)

    AA - alpha acid, that component of hops that contribute bitterness to a brew. Normally expressed as a percentage.
