I’m sorry, please don’t take my words out of context. You know full well I was talking about beer.

And Yvan doesn’t supply the whole of the UK with beer. So what JGB do, I don’t think phildo bought his beer via JGB, is a moot point.

Certainly not a magic solution....but a step in the right direction.

Of course you were talking about beer - my point was that supermarkets already have huge cold chains of their own, and it would be easy for them to implement cold chain for <5% of their beer volume if they thought it was worth their while. Right now they consider (probably correctly) that there's nothing in it for them - and it's interesting to think about what would need to change for the supermarkets to take some of their beer into their existing cold chains.

Yvan is "in" the UK which is what you said, you didn't say "anywhere in the UK".

BrewDog uses cold chain, but it only continues into their bars. Goes out the window as soon as it hits the supermarket.

You just sound disgruntled.

Firstly, the brewer isn’t charging £8. Secondly there is no cold chain in the UK. So once beer leaves a brewery it’s not put back in a fridge until it hits the consumers. Hop oils are extremely volatile. So flavours change rapidly.

The reason beer became quite uniformed from the 1960’s until let’s say 2000 was because breweries were striving for consistency and stability. That inevitably led to blandness because the things that make beer flavourful are inherently unstable. Fast forward to the “craft beer” revolution and ok yeah we have lots of flavourful beer but it’s inherently unstable.

So as a consumer YOU have the choice. The flavourful beer that you clearly crave can be niche and hard to find, often not travelling far from where it’s made or it can be the “norm” with some (small) sacrifices. But you can’t have both. That’s the long and short of it.

But you’re here and you’re making your own. Don’t worry about what other brewers beer tastes like, you just make yours the best it can be! And don’t sell it to Tesco.
You sound like you work for Beavertown...or is it Heineken?

It really doesn't matter what the brewery are charging, does it? That's the price to the consumer. And anyway, surely the price is irrelevant since, 'Logan is 100% hands on at the brewery and neither him nor Nikola would ever want to sacrifice quality.'

So we need a cold chain in order for beer to survive the journey from the brewery to the supermarket shelf? I didn't realise we lived in the tropics. It's those lads working at Tesco I feel sorry for. They must have to stock the beer shelves whilst wearing over gloves! Poor ba$tard$!

As if! I have ordered lots of beers from many different countries around Europe and never once thought, 'wow, what a truly sh1t beer.' I also go to a specialist off-licence quite often and buy beers that have come from small breweries in a different continent. Never any issues with those. I feel your cold/supply chain excuse is clutching at straws.

But thanks for the advice re brew my own and don't sell it to Tesco. Sage council, indeed!

Fwiw most quality issues I've found with beers on a supermarket shelf have little to do with transportation and the supermarket ambient temperatures, and more to do with QC issues at the brewery.

Don't have water profile but brewed this recently and came out great! Will definitely be doing again soon.

ordered this a Month a go, without looking at recipe to much and it’s the next one on my list. Just came on here after looking at the recipe again. I am surprised at how few hops are involved, I though I had mis ordered. I usually use 200 g plus in American pales.
reading through the whole thread it seems to be right. I too subsituted bravo for more Columbus and calypso for cascade, but am think of ordering extra hops.

the beer I made yesterday had 160g in whirlpool with another 100g to dry hop. I am thinking this one may pale in comparison.

Also with so few hops in hop stand I was thinking of putting them in at 5mins or flameout instead and cool straight to 20. Thoughts?

I think I would have added more to the dry hop rather than other places but am very much a novice still 😀

First taste last night, 6 weeks since brew day and been carbing at 5c for 10 days, tastes good, maybe a tad sweet but an easy drinker. Not really like gamma per se. Tastes hoppy but aroma could be better and finish Crisper. I might mash lower next time or use a dryer yeast to see how it goes
