There's no reason you couldn't make it more cost effective by using the last runnings of your wort or just spare wort instead of expensive DME. I've been saving odd bits of wort, boiling, cooling and storing in sterilised pop bottles before freezing. Figured I could just take it out, defrost and add to starter.

Out of interest, how long would you store your jars of SO4 in the fridge and still use?
