My wife wears a brilliant mask, keeps people well away from her....

But you could keep the mask for several days in a box, long enough for all live virus to die off. Also UV / ozone can sterilise it, but personally I would prefer time to be more effective.

I did think of a method to protect NHS staff and commuters on crowded trains. It's basically a pilots oxygen mask, but attached to the inside of a special jacket via a hose. The jacket itself has a zip-up compartment that contains a Hepa vacuum cleaner bag that should filter down to 1 micron, but as it is so large there shouldn't be a restriction on breathing. You just need a one way valve in there so you are not breathing the same air and asphyxiate yourself.
The benefit is that if you are wearing an outer sterile gown - that that itself acts as the primary filter, the normal clothing acts as a secondary finer filter and finally the hepa bag is the 1 micron filter that should block viruses.

As these bags are readily available, and oxygen masks already in production, it's just a case of assembly and a few specialist mouldings needed for connecting it all together.

It should also last longer than single use too as you are already changing outer clothing - which is the primary filter.
If you want to be ultra careful you could organise a mass sterilising unit using UV light on the bags between shifts.

I suppose you could make it "backpack" style to be worn on the outside. The main aim is to use a large area of a fine filter media to reduce restriction, but I liked the idea of clothing being the filter.

My last post might have come across as a tad cruel, she is in fact a sewing wizard and has produced this! Its a work of art I tell ya....

One thought on these home made masks is the fit over the nose. I've seen pipe cleaners used, but maybe copper wire would be another method. Or galvanised steel garden wire would probably be cheaper. - £1 a roll at Asda.

I've also bought some Hepa filtration hoover bags to have ago at a basic mask using this filter material.

One other thing. N95 masks with a valve - protect you, not anyone else. The valve vents your exhaust without filtering. Maybe we need to sort that out.

It’s obvious we should be all wearing masks when we go out ask the question why does this government not just say it. As ever too f***ing late. As ever we’re right and the rest of the world is wrong. Xx

They are taking advice from the WHO and they say they are not necessary for people who do not have the virus, you really do need to do a bit or research before posting it took me about 10 seconds to find this -

I saw a version of a mask where you fold the ends of a paper clip into hoops that'll sit against your cheeks, then you can bend it to put the V in the middle and then sit that at the top and you get the pinch in. Don't have a link.

Dr. John Campbell who I like a lot changed his mind on masks and now thinks they're a good idea. The "people who don't have the virus." advice is stupid because it looks like the amount of asymptomatic cases is much, much higher than previously thought so until you're tested you should assume you can spread it.

While i can understand the advantage of us all wearing masks when in shops etc (fairly close contact) to stop coughs/sneezes travelling and infecting others if the government were to say today everyone must wear a mask where would we get them there is already a global shortage.

Just saying cover your face/ mouth & nose with something - preferably a mask but any item of clothing will be better than nothing.
I've seen shop owners and a delivery guy using a bandanna.

You'll be aware that the who re-issued their guidelines on 6/4/20 which details when mask should be worn and it gives examples. These are
1. On public transport
2. Where it is difficult to have a 2 metre gap I.e. Shops
3. Risk of exposure I.e. Parks ok large gathering are not
4. Vulnerability I.e the old or infirmed.
So will you please stop your mantra of where the evidence, the government are not taking advice from who so please get you facts right.

I was not aware that was the case hence my insistence the government are taking advice from the WHO, and yet again you post with no link to what you claim which would make everyone's life a little simpler.

Are you saying this which i posted earlier is outdated?

True, true. But I think a 'face covering' is almost as good as a surgical mask (not the 'high grade' one though ) so their's lots of you tube vids on how to make your own mask. The government could advocate and easy to make mask.

I think you need to get your facts straight.

And here are the guidelines from the 6/4 you refer to.

This whole mask thing is so bleedin confusing! aheadbutt

I heard on the radio this morning that Germany is relaxing their lockdown. As part of that, they're advocating wearing mask on public transport and in shop. Germans and the German government seem quite sensible. I wonder why they would advocate that if the WHO dont appear to advocate mask wearing for the general public :?:

You have not shown the whole document because it doesn't suit your views. Why oh why do you support this bunch of fools and try and suppress anyone else's opinion.

Wearing masks in public where you are close to others probably is sensible (as in anything is better than nothing) but as it says in the document there is no evidence healthy people wearing masks in public can stop them catching a virus and with a world shortage of masks telling people to wear them would mean less for those on the front line as panic buying would ensue.
