I am doing my 2nd home brew and both times I used the same Tom Caxton Real Ale kit.

After the success of my first brew I think I became over confident. This time I got the Malt and Yeast mixed up.
I added and mixed in the yeast with the boiling water/wurt mixture then sprinkled the malt on top of the 40 pint mixture after I had added the cold water.
So basically I got the malt and yeast the wrong way around.
In my defence, Tom Caxton do not label the sachets.

Nothing much has happened after 24 hours. I seem to recall some bubbling at the same stage with the first batch.

Have I completely messed up and should I throw the batch away?

Help a noob out, thanks for reading.

The yeast is probably not viable now. As soon as possible get some more and add it.
Wilko sell Gervin yeast or the LHBS can help you out.

What he said....but you may have got the Hop powder sachet and yeast mixed up as the malt is the gloopy stuff in the tin.
I was just going by the instructions which say add the "Malt Extract" at the start (when the water is boiling), and sprinkle the yeast at the end (when water is cold).

One sachet is labeled "Hop Enhancement System" and the other has no label. It is 50 50 and I got unlucky this time.
I now realise the "Hop Enhancement System" is what the instructions mean by "Malt Extract" and the unlabeled sachet is the yeast. Apparently Tom Caxton never label their yeast.

I wonderd if the yeast was harmed by the very hot water and I now understand that it is.
Ofcourse the "Hop Enhancement System" will not be properly mixed in now but I will never make this mistake again. It all seemed so easy the first time.

Thanks for the help everyone, I will get some yeast and sprinkle it on and give it a gentle stir.

Jesus. @Hoddy

The Malt Extract is the tin of thick brown guey stuff, looks like treacle, smells like.... malt extract. I guess the Hop Enhancement System is just some hop pellet dust, the other packet will be our yeast. Not sure how you could get it all wrong.

You've probably killed the yeast. Do as Slid suggests in post #2 and add another sachet pronto.

If you have another kit which you haven't started yet, then use the yeast from that. If not, then buy some from Wilko or your local homebrew shop.

It's useful to keep a spare pack of yeast in the fridge just in case this sort of thing happens. If you have to buy a pack, buy 2 now.

The hop enhancement system is not the malt extract! The powder in the sachet that isn't the yeast is the hop enhancement system and its used to enhance the malt extract...just as hops are added to the wort to give bitterness, flavour and aroma.
