Well their are a number of reasons first ‘Crisps’ is one of a number of companies that produce Malted Barley (other companies include Simpsons, Thomas Fawcett and many more).

Certain types are varieties (i.e. Maris Otter which was a variety developed by the Plant Breeding Institute in Cambridge incidentally they are also being Maris Piper potato’s if I remember correctly), likewise with Golden Promise it is a variety of pale malt.

Crisp is the maltster. Extra Pale is an indicator of the colour, e.g. it is lighter in colour than their pale.

Some are named after the specific barley varietal, eg Maris Otter, Propino.

You've got the maltings, the level of kilning and the variety of barley. So potentially a lot of combinations but nothing mega complicated!

Crisp are one of the major maltings, Crisp extra pale would be a good base malt for most beers. The barely could be something like Maris Otter or Golden Promise etc, if it was in a 25kg bag it would probably have the barley variety listed
