As of today (Mar 7, 2019) all new members posts will be placed in an administration queue and will be approved as soon as possible the mod team regret having to take this action but feel its the only way we can stop the constant spam.

Crikey chips is it getting that bad?

I did notice that we seem to have had a big influx of new comers (which is great btw) around dec/jan but I didn’t realise we have had loads of spam attacks recently.

    Fair play mods :cheers3:

A couple of days ago I logged in and found 27 threads advertising illegal driving licences and ID that was the last straw.

The spam blocker cannot block those that do not have a Spam History recorded. There is a new class of spammers as I'm seeing first time spammers more often.

Does the forum have a spam filter or is it all done manually?

jceg316 check out post 4 above.

As Angie has pointed out above we do have a spam filter but it only works on spam history so a member joining with a username, email address and IP address that has not been banned will not be picked up by the filter.

We put all new members into a moderation queue and they have to be approved before they can post, we can see the username and email address they used to register and this often gives the game away and they are blocked but the first time or determined spammers often get through, we are hoping the new first post rule will stop them all as no linking or images are allowed for several posts.

First-post moderator approval has caught every one of the bottom feeding pond life on the forum I moderate.

This move is a good one.

Its a bit of a ball-ache having to mod new members then new posts but if it keeps the scum off the forum its got to be worth the effort.

If you have first post approval on then do you need new member approval as well? I just go in every now and then and delete registrations that haven't done the email confirm in reasonable time and those flagged with a poor IP reputation.

You will get those caught by the spam filter in the for known spammers, or those that have like names or Ips, or emails or same as a banned member.

The 1st post moderation catches the clever real people that come to spam, or the brand new class of spammers that are now showing as spammers yet. So, it's two separate levels of spam control.

Excuse me for being thick...what do spam mails "usually" look like? What can they do? What do they want?

    Cheers

Its spammers email addresses Clint, we see all new members usernames and email address when they register and the spammers are usually easy to spot and ban, we also have the spam filter running that alerts us to usernames and email addresses that have been banned previously.

Angie, as your here and on a separate note.

What’s the update on the replacement for TapaTalk? I recall you mentioning that there was going to be a dedicate app written?

At this time I think that was put aside as any mobile browser will bring you the forum with all the bell and whistles.
There are some security issues with Tapatalk and so far they are not being addressed, so it has been decided not to go that way.
