Why do carbon dioxide emissions heat up the planet?
The temperature of the Earth depends on a balance between incoming energy from the Sun and the energy that bounces back into space. Carbon dioxide absorbs heat that would otherwise be lost to space. Some of this energy is re-emitted back to Earth, causing additional heating of the planet.

Utter cack. Who told them that? Has anyone asked them if they know how carbon dioxide ( a trace gas, the total amount of which comprises a tiny amount contributed by us ) stacks up against water vapour? Seriously, some folk will believe anything.

Instead of spouting crapola every time someone posts something about global warming why don't you post something that proves global warming (whatever causes it) is a lie because its getting a little boring reading the same thing in every post!

I don't think the figures below are a tiny amount especially when you consider how many years they have been producing it.
The US emits the most: 5,800 million tonnes every year. Next is China, over 3,000; Russia, over 2,000; Japan, 1,200; and India, 1,000 million tonnes. Other major emitters are Germany, 800; Canada, 600m; the UK, 500m; and Italy, 47m.

They are not saying its just Carbon Dioxide that is causing it but it is adding to it.

Fair enough, but the onus is on the protagonists to provide proof... none is forthcoming after all these decades - it remains but a theory. The tonnage of CO2 released by us sounds colossal but is nothing, just nothing compared to the whole atmosphere, like taking a p*** in the Pacific. And where IS this damn climate change hiding?

There was an article in the Mail this week saying that some of Attenborough's "facts" in his documentaries were in fact made up to be more dramatic...for TV and to further the global warming argument.

Well said Chippy, the spouting”Crapola” is definitely getting boring.

Why 4 out of 10 Americans think global warming is a lie.

That would require something other than close minded willing ignorance. It's like trying to argue with a flat earther, no proof is sufficient so just don't bother.

May 17th 2001. President George W. Bush's national energy policy speech given May 17, 2001 in St. Paul, Minnesota, states "
The future is achievable if we make the right choices now. But if we fail to act, this great country could face a darker future, a future that is unfortunately being previewed in rising prices at the gas pump and rolling blackouts in the great state of California. These events are challenging what had become a fact of life in America: The routine, everyday expectation that when you flick on a light switch, the light will come on. Californians are learning, regrettably, that sometimes when you flick on the light switch, the light does not come on at any price.
.......
My administration has developed a sound national plan to help meet our energy needs this year and every year. If we fail to act on this plan, energy prices will continue to rise.
.......

Remember free "energy efficient" lightbulbs - delivered to your door free by many suppliers. This was UK's stopgap - small spend to reduce overall demand. And it worked! Now they are pushing smart meters to "help you reduce your consumption". Yes that is right. They are smart enough to put the tariff UP during peaks of high demand - so the energy companies don't fall short on production and we all get a brown out.
Thousands of people suddenly seeing their meters go into the red and everyone switches something off. - Problem averted.... for now.
But it won't go away.

All this talk of global warming is just about getting people to use less but at the same time pay more for what they get. That is why it is all based on how much fuel we are burning - i.e. how much CO2 it produces.

Next phase - Producing more ethanol for road fuel means less will be available for human consumption. I.e. how do you get people to stop consuming sugar? Oh yes - a sugar tax, and remove it from most drinks for a start. Increase the sale price of alcoholic drinks?
....seems to be working so far.

You see the thing about global warming is a lot of the world wouldn't mind being a little warmer - Russia for example. And if the worried politicians were really that concerned they would be planting trees like they wanted to make the country one big forest. I would quite like that - but it isn't happening like that is it?

Okay, and climate scientists are just going along with it? What do they get out of it?

I don't have a smart meter and don't want one, if i put my kettle on while the washing machine, Freesat box, TV, and PC is on i know i am using more power than if they were all off why would i then decide not to have a brew to keep the meter out of the red and save a few pence, does anyone actually save money using these meters are people so dumb they cannot work it out for themselves?

I had a 'smart' electricity meter put at my supplier's insistence about 7 years ago. After playing with the display panel for 15 minutes, I got bored, unplugged it and ended up using the power supply for something else. Then once I changed supplier, my new supplier were not even able to read it remotely, so it still has to be read manually. Worse still we all have to pay a levy on our bills to fund this lunacy.

Utter scam, promoted to entice the bozos who think appending the word 'smart' to things, magically makes them better - don't get me started on 'smart' motorways. aheadbutt

Not having your meter read was the only plus i could come up with when i first heard about them our meter is in an awkward place so it would save us some messing about.

I hear these discussions on temperature variations and I do get the arguments. However, has anyone on here read Jared Diamond's book "Collapse"?
I have read and re-read it, in parts, several times. A bit of a chore to wade through it, no doubting that, but towards the end, outlined are about twelve, seemingly discrete, but inter-related proximate threats to our wonderful contemporary Global Society. All are essentially driven by #11 - Human Numbers and exacerbated by several times by #12 - Human Expectations of what the world owes them. Anyone who can read this post and purports to want more equal distribution of the planet's rapidly vanishing resources might do well to dwell on the inevitable consequences of this on their own very fortunate circumstances.

Here is the rest of list, in short form:
1. Habitat destruction, or deforestation
2. Over-fishing
3. Extinction of multiple species
4. Soil degradation
5. Running out of finite hydrocarbon reserves
6. Fresh water shortage
7. Photosynthetic capacity of the planet
8. Toxic by products of industrialisation
9. Impact of alien species
10. Human influenced climate change

I rather suspect that climate change really does come bottom of list, because it is by a long way the least proximate threat, and that the one that is most immediate is #4 Soil Degradation. The three main elements here are erosion, loss of nutrients and creeping salinization. All derive from the inescapable need to feed everyone today and tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow... And everything that we do to try and overcome this obstacle in the short term, just makes things worse.

Overpopulation. 1st world problems. Don't anticipate many of us queuing up to solve the problems associated with these issues. Emma Thompson when asked about her choice to jet in from US to join the demo: "...I HAVE [my emphasis] to fly...." What an utter plank! Mind you I guess we all justify our unsustainable overuse of resources in some shape

Like the amount of water we use making a brew. Most of it for cooling unless you have a counterflow chiller.
Still, it falls out of the sky, innit, so what's the problem.
No, I don't use a counterflow.

I think that's why I've never wanted a wort chiller, the thought of flushing all those watery pennies down the drain! I realize brewing sends my water meter round enough as it is.
