all my ales have had quite heavy sediment of late. I bottled an IPA last night and its already passed 1mm of sed', i even gave this one an extra day to clear. Any thoughts?

Your beer needs to be crystal clear when it goes in and that includes not disturbing any sediment during transfere. You will get an increase in yeast population when you prime so there will be some due to that but I suspect it is due to transfere or it not being crystal clear. The longer you leave the beer before drinking the more compact the yeast will become, after 2 months I can poor a bottle with out worrying about the sediment, but yeast compaction is also due to the yeast variety as well.

Once fermented how long do you leave your brew? I tend to leave it in the fv for around 2 weeks after ferment has finished then transfer to my bottling fv. For another 2-3 weeks before bottling. I get sediment which is so thin its. O problem, I can pour literally all of the bottle

not nearly long enough by the sounds of it, and no racking at all. i think i'll invest in a 5 gal dimijohn to rack into, then i can see when its crystal clear

Good idea - i recently bought a carboy (5 gal demi) in order to hold some wine, but i will definately be using to store brews while they clear.

Do you use finings? I fine my brews as a matter of course, in order to reduce the sediment in the bottles and barrel.

Interesting post. Is it OK to leave the beer on the sediment for so long? I would have thought it might affect the taste. If not that's good news.

I can usually get my beer crystal clear after 2 -3 days by just leaving it on a cold concrete floor. I uaually work on a 2 week turn around from mashing to bottling. 5-6 days fermentation, 2-3 days diacetyl rest, 3-5 clearing. I usually drop into secondry after a diacetyl rest.
