Glad to see your club has got off to a good start. Its about 50 years exactly since myself and a few other students bought some basic brewing stuff from Boots on Glossop Road/West St to brew what turned out to be bad but nonetheless very alcoholic beer in what I recall to have been a 15 gallon dustbin. So keep up the good work athumb..

Technically I'm meant to be going to London for a work conference but I'm not sure I can be bothered, and I'll have to lay out the £100 train fare or whatever it costs. A good chance I might accidentally miss the train and drown my regretful sorrows in the Tap instead. Might see you there!

I unfortunately won't be able to attend (I am new to this) otherwise I would have asked this question at Sheffield Tap, but does anyone else have to treat water for chlorine in Sheffield and if so do you just use campden tablet or do you find with this water you need to add anything extra? Sorry if this has been asked before on here. In previous brews I haven't used anything and found plastic taste to my beer, this time round I've used sodium metabisulphate waiting to see how it turns out.

1 campden works for me on 20 litre batch. Split across sparge and mash

Hi all, I've been looking for something like this for a long time, so would love to come along. I should be able to make it if that's ok? I'll be getting the train from Rotherham at 7ish. If you see someone wandering around aimlessly with a pint, it'll probably be me. I'll bring along a few bottles of a Weiss beer I bottled a few weeks ago.

It'll be good to see you. Don't worry they're easy to spot, if same as last month there will be a sign on the table.

Same here. I hear a half tablet works across mash/sparge but I can't be bothered with the fiddling needed and storing the crumbles of the unused half.

I'll be there at 7:15ish. Look out for a sign on the table. I'll hopefully get the wood paneled side room reserved.

As for water treatments, I don't use Camden tablets but my water profile means my beers tend to come out on the slightly bitter side so I'm experimenting with Chloride levels to make them more balanced/malty.

They haven't reserved us a table! We're in the back room though.

Thanks to all those that came to homebrew club last night. Great night & excellent beer, with everything from 5 year old barley wine to mint 'alcopop'! Next Sheffield homebrew club will be on Thursday 21st March. It's the stout challenge so get brewing!

It was certainly an interesting one! Observing one of the brewers cellared beers through the years from 2012 to 2017 was great fun!

No worries. Pity you missed a decent night.
The booze was flowing copiously, so much so that some of the puzzled Tap customers asked us what was going on & why we were drinking our own bottles.
Tom's vintage barley wines were top notch. Good job I didn't have to get up for work!
    See you next meeting!

You're most welcome, as is anyone who wants to turn up.
We've got people who've just started brewing and those who've been doing it for years, from both Sheffield & the surrounding area.
Next meeting is on Thursday 21st March.

Anyone got anything planned for Sheffield Beer Week, 11-17th March?
Some interesting events. Probably going to try & get along to the Amundsen Dessert on a Tap Takeover at Shakespeares as my wife is into their beers and there's a Hawkshead showcase on at the Kelham Island Tavern the same night.

Not planned anything yet but hoping to get to some things. Interested to try the Old Peculiar from a wooden cask at the Sheaf. I live near there so easy to pop over.
