I always was told you need to wait till there has been a frost on them, sloes stay hanging on the blackthorn bush for ages. So I always wait till then.

We got a bumper crop of sloes this year. Can't remember who recommended it (may have been on here) but this online resource was really helpful in locating bushes.

I'm fortunate in that there's a big country park near us that is pretty wild, so there are plenty of blackthorn bushes kicking about - enough sloes for birds and foragers alike. Although next time I go I'll be taking RichardM's advice and taking my grandpa's walking stick with me :laugh8:

@BarleyFever When I’m out walking the dog and come across Sloes I pick them and collect them in an empty poo bag
I did that last year unfortunately when I got home I found the lemon scent on the bags had contaminated the berry's. Lesson learnt unscented bags used now.

For some reason my sloe whiskey seems to be much better than the sloe wine.

Maybe a result of the sugar added.
