I've just learnt the hard way not to use square bottles! I got six for £9 delivered - with swing tops. One exploded at 3am and the second a minute later. A right bollocking from the missus but the damage was limited. Bedroom carpet was OK after a Vax shampoo and my printer and e-bike batteries all survived.

My mate came back off holiday and a plastic pressurised keg had split in his kitchen. The beer had seeped most the way round the ground floor of his house and was even wicking it's way up the stair carpet. After about 2 weeks in warm weather the smell was unbearable!!!

After hearing this my missus made me transfer all me brewing activities to the garage.

Yeah, you've got to fill them up with a square syphon tube.
Only joking. Were your carbonation levels ok? Had the beer finished fermenting?
MOST IMPORTANTLY, have you drunk the other 4 yet before they join their brother and sister?

Transfer her ladyship to the garage, would be my advice. See how she likes it. Humans are adaptable and resourceful while beer is delicate and needs love.

I only filled two; they were one week into secondary fermentation. I could see tiny bubbles rising, even after seven days. So, I have only the kegged beer to look forward to. They were clear too which makes the loss even sadder...........

I know your remark is tongue in cheek, but it's hardly going to make females feel welcome here.

Oh dear, nothing worse than bottle bombs going off indoors. At least you have some in the keg to look forward to though.

Bof, I'm waiting for Chippy to suggest I be locked up the garage if it's an issue of sexism. I'll bet she doesn't. I'll bet Mad Cat doesn't. People are people, brewers are brewers. What's gender got to do with anything?

It was in the spare room/study where I do my thinking, so not really a bedroom. It seemed like a good idea at the time. Even though the bottles were next to a pricey Sonos speaker. I am an idiot!

Mine’s in the bottom of the wardrobe - most consistent temperatures in there (18 degrees).
It’s been most useful in convincing Mrs M that a brew-fridge in the garage is a good idea.

As for the science bit - square bottles would be inherently weaker as the corners are weak points, a cylindrical bottle can better cope with the pressure of carbonation.

Are the bottles intended to hold carbonated drinks? The only square swing top bottles that I have seen have been to hold posh olive oil and the like. If they are not intended for pressurised drinks, then I wouldn't use them.

No. They were from VonShef and made in China.

We sell square swing tops, BUT, only for oils, sauces etc...
They certainly aren't suitable for carbonated beverages...
