I'm originally from Kent and have been living in Canada some twenty-odd years. Anyway, was talking with the lads at the brewery I work at and trying to convince them that we should have an ESB - but they don't think it would sell well. It's all IPA here.

So that got me wondering, is the UK big on IPA now too? Or still Into the traditional bitter, porters and stouts?

Cheers!

On the other hand a well made ESB could start a new trend and be a best seller for you.

That's the argument I'm trying to make but the owners think people only want IPA and Sours right now. My two least favorite types of beer.
They may be right but it may also be a case that they (consumers) have little choice if other styles are thin on the ground. A small production run to test the market might be worth a punt?

I fully agree... we just released a pumpkin porter and that's doing well. People here generally go nuts for anything to do with pumpkin at this time of year though

I remember a TV series a year or so ago about people making a new start in France. This guy (keen amateur brewer) retired early from his job and started a micro brewery in a little central France village making English ales, bitter and stouts. The locals went mad for it and he was kept very busy trying to keep up with demand from locals and further afield.

Not sure a pumpkin ESB is quite the ticket 🤢😂

It does seem the company is prepared to put on something else, so…. Would they entertain a suggestion of having a continuous small-scale run of different beers in addition to the regular menu. Customers might be drawn to the new and different beers on offer: Saison, Altbier, Bitter, Mild, …

Hi kieron

Could you suggest some clever/distracting branding that evades calling anything by directly by its style? For a basic example (about branding rather than the quality of the beers) we have a brewing Company (wychwood) that brews ales for seasonal events. Hobgoblin (ruby ale) Dunkle Fester, Bah Humbug!, Brewdolph. A quick Google will give you an idea of their style.
If you pardon my preconception about Canada, could you offer a range branded around the Royal Family or something quaint like that and minimise the style entirely. This way establishing that it's English without saying it directly. Eg. Lillibets Poison, Lord Lucan's Secret, Fergies Favourite, Old World Water. Id imagine if the branding and beer is good the style would be secondary in consumer choice.

Just my observation however daft.
