Note to self, and anyone else that is making, or about to make a hibiscus mead...
Since my first hibiscus mead, which was a Viking Blood clone, I discovered that these meads foam up quite a bit and a blowoff tube is always required for the first few days of fermentation. Well tonight, I took the blowoff tube off, to replace it with an airlock, decided to give the plastic demijohn a good shake to mix it up, and well, the mead foamed up so much that my thumb wasn't as good a pressure retainer as I thought. It made my kitchen look like a murder scene...ceiling, walls, windows...
Lesson learned - a gentle swirl is sufficient!
