The last of todays batch of beers from memory-lane. This is the beer that got me into “real-ale” though I can’t say if it’s the same beer, my memory isn’t that good. There wasn’t much choice back then, it was lager from the tap(s) or a bottle from the fridge of Speckled Hen. The toffee/caramel flavours seem more dominant than I remember maybe. I do remember getting an upset stomach if I had more than a couple of pints - live beer!

Water tonight and for probably many weeks more as in hospital since last Thursday. Horrible pain originally but eased. Not the actual heart but from a tear in a vein nearby. Should learn later this week if treatment necessary and if so by an expert team in Liverpool. I think I will be seeking some low alcohol tasty recipes!
🤞🏼No serious treatment needed🤞🏼

Tonight, for the first time in a while, I've drunk none of my own beer. A Black Sheep, and a bitter and a milk stout from my local brewery. All very nice, but somehow, it doesn't seem quite as much fun. Or is it just me?

[Obv, I'm not claiming that my beers are better than the above]

That's a good question and I didn't get from your post that you were claiming superiority.
Personally, I always feel a little guilty for buying quality beer at full price because I can make something worthwhile for 1/5th the cost.
The pros make beers well but not so well that I can't come close enough to satisfy my taste.
It's not the money but the principle of the thing.
I may or may not have touched on what you mean.

I don't consider the money side of it, beer is frankly relatively cheap, as it goes. I think it;s just more that there's an innate pleasure in drinking something you've made yourself that a shop-bought beer can't replicate. And there's a bit more to than that, too...

That was my first real ale I ever had on cask. I was enamored at first pint. I do like it in the bottle too but did notice in a recent batch it tasted more toffeeish and less smooth than I remembered. I wonder if it's a malt change?

frankly relatively cheap,
Fair enough, it's all good. I'm on board with the innate pleasure. It is satisfying.
The beers I like can be $5 per bottle. So I compute in my head, at the time, that I can make that for $1. And that's store-bought, not restaurant prices.

If we both think it’s different then maybe it really is. I don’t dislike it but I didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I would. Someone bought me three bottles of sticky toffee pudding ale last Christmas and it was awful, Speckled Hen is nothing like it but that strong toffee flavour is just enough of a hint to remind me about it. 🤢

My own English (Best) Bitter tonight. I definitely think my own beer can hold it’s head high among the beers I drank last night. It’s good to benchmark your beers against commercial offerings periodically, even if the comparison is just how much you like them. I wouldn’t say mine is as good as Spitfire yet (to me at least) so there is still some improvement required.
