When to add flavouring additions?

Apologies if this has been asked before, but I’m thinking of doing a heather AG beer (because we’ve got a heather in our garden) But I’m not sure when the best time to add it is? I’ve got bags of time, it’ll be next spring when it’s in flour again.

It depends what you want from it, do you want to bitter with the heather like a historical beer or do you want to add some heather flavour (I have no idea what heather tastes like)?

Maybe make a tea with it (like a hop tea) and add after fermentation?
