Gavin Williamson 10 August 2020: "There is little evidence of coronavirus being transmitted in schools"
Apparently young children don't appear to be severely impacted by the virus and the vast majority get over it fairly quickly seemingly without any lasting effects, although unfortunately and perhaps tragically there will be exceptions to this, and if it happens to be your child absolutely devastating.

But to imply that the virus would not be transmitted in school or brought home by the children and then passed on to their parents or grandparents and the wider community is ludicrous.

It is true that there is very little evidence that there has been any transmission of the virus in schools. The point they missed was that the vast majority of them have been shut for the last 4 months!

Not in all countries - and that was kinda the point that some people seem to have missed. And experience seems to be mixed - AIUI the general thought seems to be that while there are cases overseas where there has been (considerable) transmission within schools, that was as much to do with them doing it badly, but there seems to be some optimism that it's doable as long as best practice is followed at all times.

How medical best practice interacts with the reality of school life is another matter....

It does seem to be the case that young kids at least, seem to be a lot less transmissible - but make up for it to some extent by having more contacts.
