My better half likes my WOWs but is put off them 'by the smell of sandwiches', which puzzled me.

However, I've drank a couple of bottles over the last few days, and we've established that what she is referring to is a kind of plastic smell. It's definitely a smell, not a taste - the wine tastes great, and this smell dissipates if the wine is left open for a decent amount of time (i.e. decanted into a jug and left for a while before drinking).

So, what thoughts do people have as to the possible cause(s)?

Perhaps she is smelling the yeast.

Last week for an experiment i made some mead with bakers yeast there is a bread smell.

Such smells should clear with a bit of age.

I also keep plastic well away from my wine.!!!
As a kid i could taste and smell plastic in pop or fruit squash that was supplied in plastic bottles

Wine can be aggresive when it comes to stripping plasticisors from plastic.
