The Catholic Church is one of the biggest scourges on earth and have perpetuated more atrocities than most despots or dictators ever. They had a massive hold over Ireland and could influence politicians and lawmakers to implement laws and acts that suited their needs from what was taught in schools to what we eat to how we live. I’m was baptised Roman Catholic but class myself as having no affiliation to them and I certinally have no respect for them. My kids are all RC but also have no religion in them. In my view people that need to follow a religion like lambs are missing something in their life and need a fake god to fill that void.
All modern religions that I know are all based on ancient pagan traditions and have been manipulated to make people think their one is the only true one.
A bit of research into the Catholic Church soon shows how they murdered their way through the world to convert people to their church and they rule in fear to this day.
I have no time for religion

I agree with some of you points, but as a very lazy Catholic disagree with some also.
I have found my faith has helped me through some difficult personal times and I would not consider myself a sheep or someone who just follows any herd.
The church has done untold damage to Ireland in the 20th century and the country was basically a Theocracy until the 1990's.
However, like most human institutions, religion has a good points.
I would recommend the following book by Tom Holland which I found most illuminating and enjoyable around Christmas. It goes from ancient Rome, to modern days. From St Augustine, to Noel Galagher.

That’s why I said “in my view” if someone finds solace it their faith then I have no issue. However my view is that it’s all fake and a church that pushes its beliefs onto the masses through fear of damnation and has a set up that the more you pay them the closer to god you will be proves their bullsiht . Pay a visit to the Vatican to see their show of wealth.
And the church has done untold damage in Ireland in every century it was active not just the 20th.
The history of the catholic church from its basis in Christianity to where it is now is a fascinating read but has very little to do religion. In my opinion.

Another point. Is faith the same as religion ?
Or can you have faith without being religious or following a particular church/demonisation ?

There are plenty of people who would have faith and would follow no particular denomination.

As an aside, I totally respect your point of view and acknowledge it.
I would never attempt to belittle your views @Donegal john

WTF does this have to do with Homebrewing!!!

Nothing.

It's a shame you didn't do a little research before asking as the Snug forums description clearly states -

The Snug
A place for all non brewing discussion.

Would you like me to remove your permission to view the Snug so you only see brewing discussion?

I'm not sure just how religious any of these people are, but in my driving around town the worst drivers (speeding, not stopping at red lights, dangerous lane changing, etc.) invariably choose licence plates with "in god we trust" when they registered their cars.

What I don’t understand is this, we live in a time when it is perfectly acceptable to challenge, question or even ridicule people on which political dogma they support or which football team they support. But for some reason their choice of religion has to be treated like delicate porcelain.
Only certain religions.

That's it, you are banished from Derry. ******* heathen

On a serious note, live and let live. My mum died believing she was going to heaven. Who am I or anyone else to tell her any different.
The problem's start when people start forcing their views on others. I include the non believer's in that statement.
