    Chasing ABV

Now quite recently I have been guilty of upping the ABV of my BIAB brews purely by either brewing slightly short, ie 20 instead of 23L or perhaps adding extra grain to the mash, which initially was an attempt to make up for the relative poor efficiency of BIAB brewing. Consequently I have been...

    Carbonating

Ok, so, generally, the rule of thumb is two weeks in the FV, two weeks carbonating, then two weeks to condition, or more if you are patient.... So, 2+2+2 I mix this up a bit depending on my brew and general temp conditions. I quite often rack after a couple of weeks and leave for another week...

    Redron's inefficient brewday...

So, after much discussion and advice on improving my BIAB efficiency, today was brew day with a focused attempt on improving things a little. Exmoor Beast clone. The recipe calls for 6020 Pale Maris otter 545 Crystal Malt 250 Chocolate Malt The hop additions are not important here. I upped...

    Rubbish Biab efficiency!

Following on from MyQul's brewday thread and ongoing discussions re grain crush and efficiency... Today I brewed a Tim Taylor Boltmaker clone with a view to improving my relatively poor efficiency from past brews using the true Biab method, i.e. Full 33L of strike water, squeeze the life out of...

Adding sugar to an AG recipe

I have a recipe for Old Speckled Hen that calls for 570g of sugar In with the grain bill. It doesn't say whether to add the sugar for the mash, or before the boil or after the boil....? I can't see the reasoning for adding with the mash, but pre or post boil ?

    Help! Over carbonated bottles.

As title. I have an Exmoor Beast AG clone that has been bottled for over a month now. It was bottled at 1012 having been in primary for two weeks and was at 1012 for three days, so I bottled it. However I noticed the plastic bottles were rock hard after a week or so, so I guessed it was over...

    oops, mini disaster !

Quick check on my three newly primed (2 wks) pb's up on the mezzanine to 'test' finds a large pool of beer on the floor ! Seems the one with the Exe valley Autumn Glory clone has leaked from the tap. Approx 2 litres over the laminate floor, good job the missus is out... Quick mop up and then a...

    S-04 yeast attenuation

Having embarked on AG brewing and bought a few clone kits, I have noticed they all come with s-04 yeast. All the brews I have done so far with this yeast has stuck at 1016 and refuse to go lower, including some partial mash brews. The only time I used anything different was a s-05 yeast which...

    You've got to laugh !

So, after a much maligned first AG brew (see 'first AG stopped'), I came to bottle it today after three weeks in the FV and still at 1018 despite adding additional wort and yeast and stirring it and beating the hell out of it with a whisk to try and get some oxygen into it. Result, a pissy and...

    First AG stopped !

As a prelim to my first full BIAB AG brew I decided to use up some grain, hops and yeast I had left over from my partial mashes, so :- For a 10L mini mash, 2.25kg Maris Otter 50g crystal malt 10g First gold whole leaf at 60mins 20g First gold at 5mins One hour mash and one hour boil...

    First AG BIAB today

Having done a few partial mashes now and on my way to full AG BIAB (just waiting for a wort chiller to arrive), I am left with some Maris Otter and some First gold whole leaf hops plus maybe 50g left of crystal malt. I have a 10litre FV stood idle and it's raining on Skye today (!) so I thought...

    Uploading photos from ipad !!!

As always, a picture can be worth a thousand words. Forgive my Luddite tendencies, but how do I upload photos from my iPad ? I go to 'manage attachments' , upload a photo from my library, which it does, but I can't work out how to add it to my text..... Is this another oft quoted 'Apple sh..e'...

    1st partial mash today

So, after much kit brewing and two months sat looking at my newly acquired 15L pan, 10kg sack of Maris Otter plus associated stuff for a partial mash, I am going to do it today, mainly because I'm not allowed to fish on Sunday (!). I will be using one can from a Wherry kit as my LME. On a...

    1st time country wine questions

Hi, As a relatively seasoned beer brewer I have recently made some rhubarb and gorse flower wine. Gorse flower- og was 1098, now been in the demijohns for two months and racked twice and very nearly clear. Last time I racked the sg was down to 1014 but still with a bit of fizz on the tongue...

    Flippin phones !

So, after drinking and eating in a delightful West Highland pub (Plockton) at lunchtime today, once again, I am dismayed at the number of people obsessed with the use of their cell phones and lap tops in a 'social' environment'! Jeez, I remember when you went out for a beer and some food and...

    Using hot tap water ?

Having taken delivery of lots of new stuff to start partial mash brewing, ,today I offered my new stainless steel 15litre pan onto the induction job to find it won't work ! Cheap grade SS apparently, ie non magnetic. So before I head to the shed and use the calor gas stove, which will take an...

    First partial mash imminent !

So, after much deliberation and the arrival of my new big shed, I have no excuse but to move my brewing on a touch. Having come back to brewing after a thirty year gap, I have been kit brewing for the last year or so and been quite impressed with my results, a big improvement on the kits of...
