    Brewing in Portugal

Hi, I'm a Dutch guy living in Portugal, where wine, not beer, rules. But coming from a place in the Netherlands close to the Belgium border it left me craving for a good beer. I did my first brew some 25 years ago, but didn't actually re-start brewing 2 years ago when a local friend got into...

    Grainfather

It is more about a proper controller than the type of kettle in that sense! Proper control gives more reproducible results, that's what you want if you made a nice beer: Make it again!

    Brewery build.

I think there is a well enough reason for step mashing if even producers of malt give recipes on their websites with multiple temperature steps. Have a look at Castle malting. But besides that I love a simple solution, so I decided to make something like a Braumeister, aka a one-pot RIMS...

    Brewery build.

I'm curious about your build, so tell us more. Having a plastic boiler already seems a bit unorthodox. I have heard it's done more often, but I saw our plastic water kettle getting brittle quite soon. Durability is lowest on the list... My list for preferred materials for a kettle would be: 1...

    Grainfather

I have a Grainfather and a self build one-pot rims with biab bag that has cost me less than half of the GF. I actually prefer to use my self build, less stuff (to clean) and for cooling I put a pan in a tub of rainwater that I exchange a few times....

    elements 100l

Just some thoughts: In general you see powers in the range of 50 to 100Watt per liter wort. For 100 liter that would mean at least 5kW for that amount. I would look for elements with large surface area top avoid scorching the wort. There are bendable elements that will always fit ;-)

    Grainfather cleaning

My GF did not come with any cleaner either, but I always use soda (Sodium Carbonate) or Oxypro, a cleaner with active oxygen. Heat to 60C and let the pump run for some time while I clean the inside with a brush

    ALVAmeister

Well the Braumeister is usually seen as a high quality piece of equipment, so I don't mind the name of the Alva connected with that :-)

    ALVAmeister

You made a very nice setup indeed, my compliments! A Brutus setup?? Was that on gas? Similar size? As the maker of the Alva I should be careful to advertise here, but if you have any questions or comments about its use, I'm all ears.... I use a setup with a bag and do mostly (almost) full...

Stuck mash, Biab bags and recirculating

In the setup as shown in the pictures, the pizza bottom is tied to the bag and hangs about 4 cm above the bottom of the kettle. I also used a separate bottom as you described, that was indeed supported on 4 screws as legs. In the meantime we have made a new bag of much coarser fabric. This...

Stuck mash, Biab bags and recirculating

Thanks for your thoughts. Yes, we have been thinking about this external small reservoir and all that comes with it, that, as you mentioned, complicates matters. ;-( So for now I skip this one. It might be a good idea just to measure how quick the liquid drains with some spent grain. I'll...

Stuck mash, Biab bags and recirculating

Thanks for the tip. The settle time is for the grain to absorb moisture, I suppose? Does that prevent the grain from clogging/sticking? I haven't tried that, but will do the next time. Why would I need an(extra) false bottom?

Stuck mash, Biab bags and recirculating

Hi, I'm designing an electric one-pot RIMS system where I use a BiaB bag to hold the grain during the mash. You could say: another Braumeister clone... I'm not a real metal worker and my wife is handy with the sewing machine ;-) Therefore I opted for this bag solution instead of some metal...
