    Lacto yeast

I have just ordered some WLP630 Berliner Wiess yeast, thisa is from the website... A blend of a traditional German weizen yeast and Lactobacillus bacteria to create a subtly tart, drinkable beer. Can take several months to develop tart character. Perfect for brewing traditional Berliner...

Brew fridge not cooling below 7 degrees.

My trusty old brewfridge has now decided its not going to cool down below about 7 degrees anymore, it used fine, just decided its not going to bother anymore! It holds 18/22 for fermenting really well. Any fixes for it?

    Hi dudes.

Just thought I'd say hello, I'm back :-) Not been on for ages, had a busy few months and also didn't have a kitchen whilst we put a new one in, so no brewing for ages. I'm back on it now though. Did my new pale ale entry for this years Welsh National and UK National HBC's last week and it's...

Igloo 45l Mash tun & Sparge arm.

For sale, Igloo 45l Mash tun & Sparge arm. Great starter tun, or for increasing volume as this thing is pretty big. Good insulation on large volumes, less so with grists weighing less than 4.5kg. I wrapped it in insulation and made a polystryrene insert for the lid. Inside is clean and in...

    Brupaks 2kW Boiler.

For sale is my trusty Brupaks boiler. Capacity is 29l, element is 2kw. Its gets max volume up to a full rolling boil with no problems. Very good condition, a bit of staining inside from malt, element is immaculate as I use limescale remover after every use (yes, EVERY use!). Comes with a copper...

    2x King kegs, bottom tap.

I have two of these for sale. One was used twice the other only once. Both immaculate and in perfect working order. O-rings are in perfect condition and the taps work fine. The lids have a valve for injecting c02. Genuine bargain as they are in 'as new' condition. (Aside from a little dust as...

How to make a yeast starter.

Making a yeast starter is very simple and is handy trick to have in your arsenal, its quick, cheap and easy and can make the world of difference to a fermentation. It's not generally needed when using dried yeast as purchasing a second packet of yeast is easier and sometimes a bit cheaper than...

    What unfermentables?

Hiya, I made a batch of ginger beer last week and pitched some champagne yeast. It's a simple recipe with not much in the way of unfermentables... 10 litres. 1.7 kg of fresh ginger. 5 tsp ground ginger. 1kg of brown sugar. 2x oranges. 2x lemons. 2x limes. OG of 1.040 FG of 0.997 (ish) It's...

    Cold crashing below zero...

Hi dudes, I made a porter recently that I cold crashed for a about a week or so, I set the FC temperature to 0.1°c, the water in the blow off bottle froze so I'm guesing the temp was fluctuating a little, and it seems that the porter has not carbed up quite as much as intended (5.1g/l of corn...

    Cold crash a porter?

Just a quickie... Is there any reason to cold crash a porter or stout? I was just wondering if I should floc out a bit of yeast before bottling?

    Chocolate porter exbeeriment.

Had myself another little beer experiment yesterday. Having only ever brewed one porter (Mikkellers Texas Ranger) I thought I'd get to grips with this style a little bit more. Quite a bit of reading up on style specifics, malt quantities and general info led me to my recipe... Maris Otter - 35%...

    Roasted wheat malt.

Hi, Just wondered if anyone has ever used this stuff? I'm brewing a chocolate porter this weekend and wondered how much roastiness and how much chocolate it gives?

    Cocao nibs.

Has anyone used them? Does anyone have any ideas when to add them in the boil?

    Late vs 60 minute additions

My normal hop addition schedule is roughly 60, 10, 5 and 1. Although I do move the late additions around to see what different flavour can be coaxed from the hops. I was watching Sam Calgione talk about his 60, 90 and 120 minute ipas on youtube last night and he claims that making a small...

    National homebrew competition

Good luck to those that have entered. First round of judging is today and the winners will be announced tomorrow. I've entered three beers, apa, aipa and Belgian blonde. I have high hopes for my pale ale (touch wood) but just getting some feedback will be great.

    Texas ranger - Mikkeller.

Got my first porter on a week last Sunday (21st) . I used the Mikkeller Texas Ranger recipe, albeit reduced down from 6.6% to a more sessionable 5.7%. The grist is; Maris Otter - 58% Crystal 120 - 12% Chocolate - 10% Roasted Barley - 10% Brown Malt - 8% Bittered with Magnum, Saaz at 15m and...
