    Disaster and redemption

I'd brewed up a Guinea's Stout kit from LoveBrewing, and kegged it on day 11 and put the keg in a water bath for the carbonation. After about 36 hours the bath water was full of beer and the keg was floating. The bath temperature was high, so I switched off the immersion heater to slow/stop...

    Keeping the mash temperature up

This may be a stupid question, but isn't it possible to keep the mash temperature at 70% or so by maintaining gentle heat in something like an Ace boiler. Although less energy efficient, it would save a lot of messing around covering the mash with insulating material. Have I missed something...

    The steam

I've gone over to the dark side and done a small (5l) batch of all grain. Ok - it's cold in North Wales and I've got the windows closed, but the steam and condensation is considerable. It reminds me of when youngest son was at home and having two hour showers. So, what's it like with a 23l...

s30 valve freezing in open position

I've been using an s30 valve to inject CO2 into pressure barrels from a Sodastream gas bottle. The trouble is that this is very tricky and you have to trickle the gas in, as otherwise (and it's just happened for the second time!) the cooling caused by the expansion of the CO2 into the...

What is the longest you have kept beer for?

Was it the deliberate ageing of a super strength barley wine, or the bottle discovered at the back of the cupboard? What difference does long ageing make?

How do you get rid of it all?

Let's face - we all have an over production problem. I was producing over 30 lbs of tomatoes per week from my greenhouse when both sons were still at home. When I was shooting and making my own ammo, I was hard pressed to get enough range time to shoot it off. I fish, and tie my own flies, but...

    Experimenting with all grain brewing

Just started drinking my first home brew for over 30 years. Mrs. LB tried some and reluctantly conceded that it tasted like beer. The brew is a Kentish Ale kit from Love Brewing and it did everything that it said on the tin. However..............and with blokes and hobbies there is...

How brewing has come on since my student days

I had done some home brewing at home as a teenager, but was unable to do so at university. However, some brave souls in student flats matched home brewing with the cultivation of what I naively thought were tomato plants in the loft. Judging from the reports I had from a few friends who had...

    Carbonation questions

Please forgive me if these questions seem idiotic, or have been answered elsewhere. I've gone back to home brewing after 30 odd years, and the basic keg kit seems to have changed little. I've got a King Keg (as yet unused) and it has a s30 valve which connects to what look like the old...

    Greetings from Llangollen

I'm back to brewing after a gap of well over 30 years. I started brewing as a teenager, wasn't able to do it at university, and then started going in earnest when I was married. Those were the days of the Boots kit and little else. One of my specialities was a totally undrinkable massively...
